I picked up a 2005 Cummins 4X4 on Thursday. The transmission fluid was low and burnt so I dropped the pan, changed filter and fixed the leaking cooler lines. It drove very nicely up to third gear but on the way home I realized it wouldn't shift into OD. My scan tool can communicate with the PCM but when I try to connect to the TCM it gives a communication error. No fuses are blown. Also the shift cable is kind of janky.

I'm wondering what're the other cheap things to try to see if I can get 4th going. I'm very unfamiliar with dodges as I've been a Ford guy most of my life. The truck has 60k miles on the motor and the front and rear diff were rebuilt last year with limited slip. Body has dents but no rust on it or the frame so truck has potential. I also got it for free so happy with the price lol

If I can't get the transmission shifting into 4th I will probably manual swap it. I'm not really into paying thousands for another slushbox that can be killed by any number of things. I diesel/manual swapped my old bronco so that would be nothing new for me. If I could get another 6-12 months out of the auto that would be great though.
