My buddies older brother had a 2000 cc lb 4x4, only has first gear and reverse.

I'm normally down in the idi basement, just looking for some rebuild tips on this generations transmission.

Any input is welcome and appreciated.

The 4R100 is pretty easy to rebuild. Best thing to do is have a manual handy ATSG or Ford.

If the tranny has a lot of miles, you might want to instal new bushings. Replace all the needle bearings and thrust washers.
Replace the factory OD snap ring with a Sonnax Spiral lock ring. The factory ring has a bad habit of popping out. Unlike the E4 this ring can destroy the case.
Replace the coast clutch snap ring with a TransGo Butt Lock snap ring. If you use a TransGo Tugger kit in your rebuild you will get this ring and a spiral lock ring.
The center support hub has no gasket. Instal Sonnax 36743G. This will prevent leakage between the ring and hub.

Soak you frictions for a minimum of 30 minutes.
When setting your clutch spec. Go with the tightest number. Sloppy stack clearance will create excessive friction. You might have to buy a snap ring or two. But you will have a more reliable rebuild.

He just thinks he has 1st and reverse, it's actuelly 2nd and reverse. The tranny has gone into so called limp mode. Wht he has to do is retrieve the code(s) to see what went wrong. What is the mileage on it. It takes several special tools to rebuild it or he can make his own. Tools cost around $200 or a little less.
