Of course the attraction of the PSD was not in stock trim but the almost unlimited HP potential available if you made some modifications, whereas we're clearly limited to around 250HP and 500lbs-ft on the IDI without some extensive engine mods to handle it.

You have to remember that we are the minority here. The vast majority of diesel truck owners never modifiy them or even want to. They keep'm stock and just do maintance only. For a few, "bomb-ablity" will attract them to a PSD, but for most, that's not part of the purchase decision.

Back in the mid 90's though, I don't think there were a lot of performance diesel parts on the market.
Wow, they brought that engine up 15 hp in 3 years?

Can you even feel that kind of increase?/

What gains did the IDI see in its life span?

Good point!!!
Im not trying to turn this into a PSD vs IDI bashfest at all. But how can someone say the PSD only gained 15 hp in 3 years when in 10 years the IDI didnt do much more than that. In 1983 the IDI was 170 hp and in 94 after switching to the 7.3 and stuffing a turbo on it it was at 185 hp.

the turbo idi was more than 185hp, the n/a 7.3l in 91 was 185hp and with the high elevation settings they where 166hp

The 93/4 7.3 IDT was 195 hp, not 185... BIG difference there... LOL
My 86 6.9 is 175 hp, my buddy's 93 N/A 7.3 is 185...

When you are dealing with non-stock stuff as most of us are, the stock ratings go out the window. Heck, my CTD's are rated at 160HP/400 lb/ft stock... I guarantee the 92 makes quite a bit more than that.

So, from the 83 6.9 @ 170 hp we actually went backwards to 166 hp in 91?

I was only using the numbers Heath provided, if I was off by 10 horse I apologize. So in 11 years we went from 170 horse in the 6.9 to 195 horse in the IDIT.

Agreed 100% but we are talking stock numbers here. A mildly moded 2000/2001 vintage 7.3L PSD will easily shake out 400 horse and was only factory rated at 235.:cool

And the 6.0 will pop 400 with just a tuner.

No, 166hp is for the High altitude motor. The 6.9 High altitude motors were rated for 150hp.....so it went up 16hp through its life span.
Welp, it's got the PSD beat by 1 pony then. :D But thats just over the three years of the OBS PSD. I think by 2003 the 7.3L was pushing 250 in certain trims.
