Sup, i have a 1992 f250 4x4 with a dana50 ttb, manual locking hubs, i was wondering since everybody changes them, if the auto locking hubs are worth it since nobody even talks about them, and if so, where could i get them?

Do you have an electric shift transfer case? There's an electric clutch in the transfer cases that will spin up the driveshaft to the hubs will lock and the shifting hubs on the transfer case will align.

The electric clutch is only so you can engage 4x4 on the fly while moving. You can use auto hubs without the electric transfer case, you just have to treat it like you have manual hubs and stop before engaging 4x4.

If your auto hubs are working correctly, you can get under the truck with everything off, transfer case in 2wd, and grab the front driveshaft and turn it. It's won't hardly even move one turn and then it will lock and you will not be able to turn it anymore because the auto hubs locked in. Move the truck backwards 8-10ft in 2wd and they will unlock.

Except when manual hubs are locked in you can shift on the fly. Auto hubs manual transfer-case real pain in the ass for icy roads, dry pavement, icy roads etc.

When not properly maintained they can leave you stranded in 2wd. No 2wd option in 4 low, 4 low can be nice on dry pavement for maneuvering in tight places but the binding of the front is annoying.

Auto hubs have issues with not engaging or partially engaging. You know what happens when they don't engage. No 4X4. If they partially engage, you can end up with parts damage from a hub or hubs not engaging under power and then they suddenly fully engage. I've heard that it comes from them getting dirty. Like what hce said.

People replace them because they fail. They work fine for just needing 4x here and there, and relitively gentle use. Use them with tire chains, or get stuck and try to rock it back and forth....that usually will fail them.

Plowing snow they would always break. I have seen them blow right off the axle. They are junk.

Before your install them take them apart and clean. Excessive grease is the enemy especially when cold. Either a very thin grease or oil on the sliding parts. Make sure you have the correct locking nut them.
