Towcat,
Just unload a bunch of scrap metal yesterday. My truck was 10,400 lbs. with a normal load of tools etc. in the utility body and the bed empty. So just about the same as yours. What sort for fuel mileage does your carrier get with the 5.13 gears?
i haven't done calcs in some time, on the average in-town 10-12mpg on the open road with steady cruise keeping up with traffic @65-70mph, i am easily seeing 200mi per tank with a 4-5gal reserve in the rear tank. that puts me on the average of 14-16mpg loaded or unloaded. when loaded, I have no problem running off the governor all day long. these motors can take it.

Towcat,
That is really incredible! I guess I understand the IDI can get away with that because they are such low HP at about 25HP/liter. I tend to be conservative with engine operation. But I am used to the marine world where 45HP/liter is common and 70+HP/liter is not unusual. Thanks for the mileage info. I will check back in after the gear swap.

The F-Superduty really was an overachieving truck. The 7.3 indeed will run for years on the governor and the chassis is damn near bulletproof. I would venture to say that the E4OD would be the weak link but even that can be built well in this era. Even the ZF5 speed is under rated for this truck in my opinion. I hope to build an F-Superduty at some point, they are beasts. Good luck with yours, please post fuel mileage, it would be a great comparison if you follow through with your plans.

Okay so heres a loaded question can you stick a GV behind a super duty since it has the parking brake mounted to the tranny?

That would rock out in my F350. I'm on the fence as to getting an underdrive or over drive unit. UD would be great with 4:10's for towing heavy, OD would be good for highway cruising.
