145* hmmmm t-stat or sender?

while out doing my rounds, I noticed the truck not getting up to temp.
145* is the max I saw while out driving for an hour.

i only use the ford t-stats. but its possible, as this was a spare engine, that i may have left it out.

but, even without a t-stat, it should get hotter than 145*!

or is my sender busted?

the engine is hot to the touch.

i also have the sender in the back of the drivers side head.


what do you think?

anyone ever run one without a t-stat?

Yes I ran a Jeep without a t-stat and it never got up to operating temps. You need the restriction of the t-stat before it will get hot.

Does your top radiator hose have pressure at cold start up? If yes,then you have no t-stat or it is failed / modified.

I think your temp is probably right on if you have no stat. Probably not working the engine enough to get to temp otherwise.

Get out your digital laser thermometer. If you don't have one, go get one. They are handy!

Shoot the top of th radiator, I have found it to be almost dead on with my gauge.

thermo gun says 120 while temp says 145

will check hose on the next cold start.

cant remember if i left the t-stat out or not.

ill be breaking into it after this current side job is done.

If the stat was left out or its held open on a cold start there will be coolant movement in the radiator top tank. Might drain it down so you might see fluid movement. then refill it. Might block off the top or bottom half of the radiator too.

gonna buy a t-stat today and hope to install it.
but first, 70 chevelle vert.

the good news is... after driving it all day yesterday, no loss of coolant.
happier than a pig in feces.

First, clamp the top radiator hose shut and run the truck for a bit. If it heats up normally you know it's the thermostat.

i feel pretty confident that i didn't install a t-stat when i put this together.
a case of, " i dont have a motorcraft t-stat, so i just wont put one in."
i put this engine together in a time where i had 3 engines apart, and i must have slapped it on without.
besides this minor issue, the damn thing runs great, minus the fact that i don't have my torque cam

Torque Cams definitely make the coolant flow faster, the results is the coolant don't pickup the spark plug heat.

Bill, could you point me to the location of said spark plugs?
ive heard storys that they are inserted in the pre cup, but also heard they were in the glow plug controller
