The way I was taught is heat evenly with torch, making constant circle, until it smokes.

Nothing touchy about the subject, just honestly have not heard of another way, or ever seen a reason to come up with one....

Black Dawg...you are probably right...maybe there is no 'Correct' way...

It is just my preference to not use the torch although out in the field and in the shop whatever works and lasts is all that matters.

I have just seen some folks heat 'em up cherry red before and I can't get that horror show outta my head.

I thought that I would bring it up and do a survey to see what Y'all thought about it.

I kinda knew it could be a touchy subject.
Dude, this totally isn't a touchy subject. Now if you want to talk about oil preference or fuel pumps? That'll heat up a bit, but if you really want to see sparks, start talking about the glory's of WMO and how there's NO way it could really mess up a IP!!! That'll get em going! LoL!

Hey Black Dawg...you must be near Yellowstone, right..?

I thought that things are heating up out there...as far as more caldera activity...thought that I saw something on YT about it.

How's things so far.?

I dont live close to yellowstone, but I do hear the same story every year about increased activity, seismic/and other stuff.....Actually pretty interesting stuff to me, I just crack up at the way people report things.

I am by no means a professional mechanic so any of my advice can be taken with a grain of salt. My skills are more alone the lines of any small farming operation where all kinds of equipment must stay operational, but definitely can't afford to pay someone else to fix it.

Truthfully I have found that you don't have to get them super hot to get it expanded enough when the entire thing is heated evenly. Like the bearings in a zf5 fit so tight that I have broken several bearing separators trying to pull the old ones. On installation I put them in a toaster oven at 400 degrees for about an hour, when first put on they actually flop around for a few seconds until they cool a bit.

I actually just welded it back on. J figured, what’s the worst that could happen, I ruin it? If it is terribly imbalanced then I’ll just park it until I swap the 5 speed in, which I will get a new flywheel for. I prefer to drive it versus my Dodge, since my 6.9 gets Prius fuel economy compared to my thirsty V10 Dodge. Of course, any kind of a load or trailer and I’ll whip out the Dodge without a doubt, it makes way more torque than my 6.9. At the expense of fuel…

After welding it on, it actually vibrates much less… interesting…

Just curious about what works in this situation...what did you use to weld it..? Mig or stick..? if mig...what kind of welder and wire and the settings you needed to make it hold.

If stick...ac or dc and which rod and what settings did you use.

I am just gathering data in case I have the same trouble.

@XOLATEM this is a great example of asking a question that someone else wants to ask but doesn't for some reason. I'm guessing it was stick, but I don't know anything about stick welding.

Thank you so much for the compliment Jesus Freak.

I would guess stick, too...but with a rod that can meld steel and cast iron. The ring gear is heat-treated steel but the flywheel is probably cast iron but it needs to be a good grade of iron to take the punishment of the diesel firing impulses without fracturing.

Probably alloyed with nickel and manganese. Maybe some other trace elements.

This will affect how well things will stay together.

On an auto transmission flexplate the ring gear and flexplate are both steel. Much easier to weld and less/almost no chance of fracturing except if too much heat is used and then you run a chance of failing just past the weld.

Just my two cents...

By the way...I am only an advanced beginner at most everything in my mind. I like to gather info whenever and however I can.

My welds are ugly as home-made sin but they have all held so far.
