Hello,

my trucks bottom end met its end last week on an off ramp, and I’ve been looking for a new engine. I am between a used questionably running 89 e350 van for $900, and buying a rebuild engine straight to my door for $3750-5k.

I’m leaning towards the rebuild, mainly because the truck spends most of its time on seasonal roads in the middle of nowhere, and one tow would cost more than the price difference. Also not having to put down cardboard for my oil leaks at peoples houses would be awesome lol

Any suggestions on places to get rebuilds from? Gotta get another 300k out of the motor to make it worth going new.

thanks. CL

I wish I could afford R&D, starts at around $8,000 for a turnkey. Maybe someday

Wes was also talking about selling reman engines at one point, but I have no idea how that ever went. If you go with Promar, be sure to check the oil galley plugs behind the cam gear. There's been a few Promar engines that have had one or both of these fall out and cause a loss of oil pressure. The thing to do is to use a chisel and put a couple of pings across the plug in a cross pattern. This will slightly deform the block (like the factory did) and will keep the plugs from falling out.

Is the 6.9 a viable swap for the 7.3? I have a banks turbo, wouldn't want to have to mess with that. They seem to be around 70% the cost of a 7.3 from the junkyards when known running.

It is as long as you stud the heads and keep the boost to 15 PSI or less to be safe. They are physically the same on the outside so anything from a 1983 6.9 will fit onto a 1994 7.3 or vice versa.

I think there's a head bolt size change from 6.9 to 7.3. Plus, the factory turbo engines (93-94) have a stronger rotating assembly.

Reality check - you like IDIs that much? Folks have swapped in better turbodiesels for less...

I think whenever I have to do another engine, I’ll either get a 7.3 from promar and have them do studs and what not, or if CDD is doing them one day I’ll do that lol.

I read it as taking a stock turbo kit off of a 7.3 and putting it on a 6.9. In that case a 6.9 would be fine. I also was reading it as a complete, running, used 6.9 from a junk yard just to get the truck back going again.

I did a Promar engine. 94 idi turbo. I also went with Felpro gaskets and a head stud kit at the same time. Now with a few miles on it, I might have considered a girdle but running OEM parts so far, here's hoping the bottom end can hold together with my lead foot. 4.10 gears in a dually CC and using the O/D switch to shift into 4th about 60-70 on a hard pull.
Uh, Oops?
I am reluctantly, possibly, perhaps and, maybe even a maybe, looking at the Allison transmission addition next year. Add about $12K to the cost of this toy to keep the RPM range in it's power band.
Gears for go.

I'm leaning towards just spending it all on a down payment.

$3600 for a reman from pro mar that doesn't even come with any of the $2000 of injection system parts. And the trans needs repair as well. So that's $7,000 and I still have a hole in the floor. Definitely got sold a hunk of ****

Got my eye on a 2014 6.2 f350 ExtCabLB, might have to be the way. $250/mo after spending what I would on IDI parts on a down payment

How much do part out trucks go for? Someone with an engine block could have this running in a day.
