Has anyone just removed their muffler and tossed it in the trash and went with a straight pipe. I did that with my 6.0 Powerstroke and you couldn`t tell any difference in fact I think it runs better without it. I am thinking about doing that with my 89 7.3 any suggestions?

As long as the exhaust exits out toward the back of the truck (in the factory location or straight back), I don't think it's all that loud inside. I ran my first 85 F250 that way for several years.

As with your 6.0, I didn't see much power difference. I have a muffler back on my truck and it's NA 7.3.

I'm running straight pipe dual 4" stacks ( no crossover pipe). Yes it's loud but not unbearable until you put your foot into it and then it will wake the dead.

I have a dual exhaust system with glass pack mufflers. The tail pipes exit behind the rear wheels. Inside with the windows rolled up I don't really notice it, but once you get above about 2,100 RPM it gets pretty loud. They have a very sharp snapping sound at higher engine speed.

how restrictive is the oem mufler. Mine appears to be stock from 1989?

Ha if that's the case probably about 1" of passage through the soot buildup. And 200 pounds of carbon and rust inside. I straight piped mine and felt bad about trying to get up to speed because it was so loud. I have a Cherry Bomb Salute on there now and like it quite a bit. I just miss my jake brake sound.
You'll do good to to replace the stock y-pipe while you're at it. I put dual 2 1/2" into a single 3" and it helped my EGT's and mpg's good bit

When the muffler rotted out on my 6.9 I decided to straight pipe it. Really wasn't much louder than the thrush welded muffler I had on there except when you had it floored. Mind you this is with all 3 inch pipe from the y back.

Buddy of mine did the same thing with his truck. Only his was 2.5 inch pipe and it was almost obnoxious loud.

Imho leave it or replace it with a better flowing one. If you spend a lot of time behind the wheel, the muffler, in addition to quieting things down, knocks the drone off and makes the ride much more pleasant.
