Windshield replacement

quoted 200$ to have windshield replaced, how much does one cost and should I just let them do it or is it easy enough for me to do it? Mines cracked broken and now coming out I can hear a whistling while driving so it's due. 88 f350 crewcab

I pulled mine and re sealed it. Wasn't that bad of a job with the right tools.

The first question is if you can get a replacement cheaply enough. I might well pull the old one myself, clean it up, sand/paint any rust and take the time to do it right... then have someone install it if it's that cheap.

Tools - watch a video on youtube, but a heat gun should help.

$200 pretty decent, but there are different level of glass. PPG is good glass be surprised to see one installed for $200. Lots of import glass out there, some may be decent. It will cost 35-50 dollars just for urethane and primer. Probably can remove the glass with a pull knife and long knife, $30-40 on ebay. $15 dollars for a trim removal tool. High ratio caulk gun at minimum for the urethane, unless your have popeye arms, $25. Couple of suction cups for installing. Most likely for one it will be more then $200, but second one should be cheaper. If I could get one for $200 installed around here I would never entertain the thought of installing myself or calling in favors.

If it were me I would pull thit glass out myself and make sure everything is clean of rust and treated and then have them come and install it. Probably cost you $150 and you will still have the peace of mind that any rust is treated.

My auto insurance has a glass replacement program with a $100 deductible (and zero out-of-pocket for small enough chips that can be drilled and filled if not in the direct line of vision). I take it yours doesn't?

I'd personally would go with thewespaul on this my "93 Ford has hair line crack down the middle where the rear view mirror is in hear no noise yet but was quoted $165 from a place called www.safelite.com they come to your house work where ever you are not sure if you have one local or not

I recommend letting them do it. I worked as a glass installer for a couple years and I've seen people really mess up their vehicle by trying to do it themselves. If you can get it replaced by them for $200 i say take it

^^^^ +1; yes, rust/debris/whatever in the channel is an issue. But any _REPUTABLE_ glass shop should clean that up for you as part of the job. If it needs actual paint, they should give you the opportunity to do it. We've had two windshields done by Safelite. Here in Madison, Safelite bought up a local "chain" called Auto Glass Specialists. They came out to the house, cleaned up everything, then gave my wife a few minutes to paint what needed painted, then finished the job. Been flawless ever since, through about eight Wisconsin winters/springs/summers/falls.

I had leaks around the windshield of a recently purchased 86 250. The previous owners had sealed the chrome trim with silicone to try to stop the leaks. Once I removed the trim and all the leaves that were stuck behind, I realized the glass had a small crack in the bottom corner, and algae was growing in the bottom seal where water has been trapped for years... But no rust was found. $240 for a new windshield installed, money well spent.

Safelitw is the company I got quoted 200 for, sounds like I'll probably let them do it. Very rarely does someone's else work on my truck lol

I would recommend Abra Auto Glass. The techs really know their stuff and you might get a better deal on the install.

I can see if they are close to me also,a safelite is located in my town but I'll look them up too
