Have a 89 7.3 idi non turbo that will not start at all. Was running great got out and went into the bank for 5 minuets came out and started for 5 seconds and died and will not start. Tried a little ether and nothing. (Glow plug relay is bypassed and in working order) has done this before but usually will fire right up with ether. Any suggestions? Replaced all return line fuel lines all injectors are working. New batteries, new alternator, new starter. Any help appreciated.

Try pouring some cold water over the IP, if it starts, then you have a worn out IP.

Ok. Will try this when I get back to the truck. Could it be the fss?

Well yeah if the wire to it is broke to it, pull the wire off, then on/off the wire, you should hear a click each time.

Why would the IP affect it running on ether? It should run on ether with the IP completely off the truck correct?

Yes, could be an issue with starter not being able to crank quickly enough, possibly caused by a loose or coroded terminal connection

Just got to the truck and poured cold water on the IP and fired right up. Guess I’ll be replacing it. How big of a job is it?

Not bad at all. About four hours to swap mine including tps setting. Where are you looking at getting a rebuild?

People here will generally recommend CDI and typ4. There is another rebuilder who is active on another site who people also like. I went with cdi and was very happy with the quality. It took about 10 days to ship because one wasn’t available right away but it was worth the wait. Core return and refund was also quick.

How does pouring cold water on the IP let you know it's bad? I also have a 7.3IDI T that was running quite well but now then the returns started leaking and it won't restart. I don't think it's the IP because the one on there only has about 2.5 hours on it but am very curious about the cold water.

These pumps wear and their tolerances open up, causing them to struggle to pump fuel. Once you add heat into the formula they may not be able to supply enough pressure to pop the injectors open. Cooling it with water then seeing if that affects starting demonstrates whether the ip is the issue.
