Has anyone ever did a zf6 swap instead of zf5?

Is it any different from the zf5?

I have a 1992 f250 idi

Well 1. all you gain is the extra Low gear.
2. You would need a custom adapter, as it won't bolt right up.

The 7.3L 6speed should be a bolt-up. Its the 6.0L version that needs a custom adapter.

I'm a big fan of the diesel ZF5 (S42)... basically 6spd ratios only without the low 1st. Use the tcase for low gear. The e4OD's tcase fits the ZF5, but the spline may have changed for the ZF6.

This is the most comprehensive write up regarding a zf6 swap that I have found. 4 of the 6 idi bolts will match, it's the top two that won't. The thick cast adapter has to go, and you'll need to use a 13" pressure plate and clutch with correct zf6 splines mated to an IDI flywheel. Fortunately South Bend only makes 13" clutches for the zf5 or zf6 now, so with their flywheel and clutch that would bolt together with a balance check. Also the transfer case behind a zf5 is a BW1356 and the zf6 is paried with a NV231. You'll have to use both, adapt drivelines, and mate clutch master to slave cylinders. Not a simple affair, but it is one I will eventually be doing as I too have the E4OD and want the ZF6.

If the ZF6 gave an extra high gear instead of a low gear, I would do the swap too. But as it is, My issue is with my truck being too low geared most of the time lol.

Wrong.
The one zf5 is no problem swapping. The 6 is a different story.
It's different enough that I can't easily swap one into my obs powerstroke.
I've looked in to it before.

@79jasper is highly correct. Before I sound like an uninformed cheerleader, the zf6 swap is daunting but not impossible. Likely to be expensive, and the argument of cost vs gain should be considered. My personal opinion is the extra money will be worth it to ME, but that isn't so for everyone. Having driven both 5 and 6 in similar pickups I liked the splits and drive-ability of the 6 over the 5, but that is only my opinion.

@Rebecca Koch it comes down to what you want and what are you willing to spend for it. Possible yes, easy no.

Oh sorry, I didn't mean send it in. He has gear packages for the DIY that are reasonably priced. Check it out, he also has an ebay store.
Oh gotcha. Ya I'll definitely check it out of I end up going that route! I'm actually running at least 4.56 right now... My truck was a mining company truck at first lol.

Personally, I think it would be beneficial if someone also wanted to run 3.55 or higher with it.
But that's a lot of money all at once. Especially if 4x4.

@79jasper I agree about the 3.55's enhancing the 6 speed splits, but living in Oregon our speed limits aren't that high and honestly I just don't like driving over 65. But I would like to reduce my overall RPM's and I felt 3.73's a good compromise. For nearly any other western state I would go with 3.55

I stand corrected... sounds like the ZF6 spacer is thinner, although it keeps the same pattern as the ZF5.

https://www.oilburners.net/threads/zf6-same-pattern-as-zf5.52923/

Ok, ya... this messes up the IDI conversion, because the IDI uses an adapter for the trans, whereas the PSD uses a spacer.

EDIT: I used to drive a '90 F250 IDI/ZF/3.55/4x4. It was quite ideal for just about everything, and did well on fuel. 31" tires most of the time.
