Ordered a Detroit Truetrac rear differential and will install it and 4.56 gears front and rear with powertrax locker in front.

When attaching pic to your post, always use the 'Go Advanced' button and add your picture there. It will NOT show, if you don't.

So how have the shifting issues been resolved? I know you were working through a few different things. Truck looks great by the way. I have a 7.3 on a stand I am freshening still hoping to find a SD carcass in good shape.

I was able to make that converter work and drop the 53 pulses from the IDI cam gear down to the required 36 needed for the PCM and tachometer. The problem is the IDI sensor has a very weak output in stock form and isn't quite enough to trigger the converter properly. I am now trying to make another sensor work, but the problem is the vacuum diaphram is very close to the sensor hole with a sepentine belt setup. . Still designing . haha.. Thanks

Don't know if this will help you, but I faced a similar problem when trying to wire up a gas tachometer for a diesel engine in a ford ranger a few years back. I ended up using a darlington pair transistor inside the wiring harness to boost the signal high enough for the tachometer to detect.

The catch with this particular sensor is it only puts out a 0.4V pulse. To solve this, I sent that pulse into a Darlington Pair Transistor to act as a crude amplifier. That got the pulse up over 7V. The tach seems to run well on anything above 4V.

I'm not sure what thresh hold the factory E4OD transmission controller requires, but in my case, 7 volts was enough the tachometer in the ranger. Different application, but similar root problem (low signal voltage).

Thank you. I just saw your post. I will try it or somehow change the sensor. It still isn't wired up yet and i am just driving it with the transmission shifting way early.

So far, so good. Except for trans shifting early, the truck runs and starts beautiful. Mileage at this point is roughly 18mpg. I don't believe that is bad with the IDI, E4OD, 33 inch mudders and 456 gears..

Wow, 4:56 gears should have some grunt down low! Have you had the truck on the scales to see what this setup weighs?

yep 456. It pulls alright. 456 with these tires is about the same as stock 410's and tires.. Scaled over 7200 when i was at the recycling plant.. Rpm is about 2300 at 70

It's illegal in Tx, but they don't pop the hood so its really no biggie.
I know this is very old but I have to....

How? Harris county only does SAFETY on diesels. And yes, They DO open the hood. It is REQUIRED by law and local DPS technicians. I know this because I was a state inspector for both a shady fast lube type joint and a local Ford dealership service dept. Only thing emissions related we tested on diesels was fuel cap, check the exhaust manifold and intake, Crap like that. I've had coal rolling diesels come in and because all their safety equipment was present and functioning properly, We had to pass them. OTOH, I've had gassers come in smoking like a bong...badly...... But, The ECM didn't throw any codes so no CEL and the state computer passed it so I had to slap a sticker on it. Gotta love dummy sensors. However, Some inspectors are crooked and will overlook things for a slip of cash because the job doesn't pay worth a crap and its mostly kids or old retired guys. Some are smart and know what to look for when undercovers from pearland come in. Others don't and get hemmed up good....

All is going kinda good so far. Just took an 800 mile trip back and forth to Utah to pick up a camper with it. I know it is an IDI but it seems to be lacking power. I do not have the pump turned up, but turbo is producing roughly 5 psi at stock settings. Any hill and the truck drops on its face and I will have to drop into 3rd and sometimes 2nd.. EGT stays at 1200 in these conditions as well. The camper is only 2000lbs and the truck weighs roughly 7000. I have checked the timing and found it was just a hair advanced. I adjusted it to spec and it is still kinda flat on power. I would think this setup with 4.56 gears and 33 inch tires, the IDI turbo would do much better. Is it just the nature of the beast? Thanks all
