Any style of muffler to stay away from?

I put a new 3" exhaust put on my e250. I originally had a Walker RV muffler installed. It worked well, but after a few months something inside the muffler started rattling badly at idle. Since time was a factor I just cut it out and put a pipe in. Now its time for a new muffler. I am looking for something that will be fairly quite under load but won't cause my EGTs to rise or hurt performance. Is there any certian styles of mufflers I should be looking at (glasspack, chambered etc) or that I should stay away from? Thanks

I've heard that chambered are less than desirable because the soot can block them up...

Most folks will recommend any kind you can see through

The stock mufflers were chambered and I have never heard of one carboned up to the point of being a problem.

I would vote for a straight-thru also, but one with a large chamber. That will result in the combination of the lowest restriction and the least likelihood of a drone. Straight thru mufflers fitted untuned to a system can sometime result in a drone at a specific rpm range. The smaller the muffler, the more likely that is.

I have tried and like the Dynomax VT mufflers. The #17966 is a 20" inch muffler with 3" in and out and I was planning to use this on my when I revert from 4 back to a 3-inch system. The VT series are advertised as the "no drone" muffler, being self tuning. I used one in a magazine project on a gasser that had a drone and by golly, it worked. They now make them in stainless steel. That would be my current specific suggestion. The muffler added zero backpressure to the system on that particular truck (it has a built in backpressure gauge for testing). Just google Dynomax and VT, then find the 20" stainless.

Then there are turbo styles like this, but I am not sure if soot would be an issue with them.

a turbo muffler for a gasser will not be diesel friendly. i have had very good results with a straight through truck muffler with a louvered core and two baffles turning the inside essentially into three chambers. no glasspack to break down. great rumble at idle and off idle. high rpm bark is cut out almost completely. in the last 15+ years running the muffler, no noise tickets from DOT;Sweet;Sweet;Sweet

I am thinking this one might fit the bill.

The info from MagnaFlow Says:
Features and Benefits: MagnaFlow XL 3 Chamber Mufflers use a unique combination of large diameter perforated tubing and strategically placed sound baffles to reduce unwanted resonance and help your engine create horsepower.

The sound baffles tune the sound waves using calibrated tuning gate openings that allow portions of the waves to pass through. These tuned waves reflect off the back wall of the muffler and cancel out unwanted harsher sounds.

The large diameter perforated core eliminates the flow restrictions of a louvered style core. A careful balance between perforation size/spacing and the baffle tuning gate make for a great 3 chamber performance muffler.

All mufflers are reversible for custom installation. Backed by a Six-Year Limited Warranty. All welded and built to last.

I like the way my sounds with the glasspack I installed. MagnaFlow Glasspack 31in long 2 1/2in ID. I did a lap weld then did a weave weld on top of that. It is a very loud exhaust with out all the raspy sound of a straight pipe.
