Why would the diesel industry as a whole go for turbo charged diesel engines and automatic transmissions? Mine has the E40d and I cant stand it, the automatic transmission just drives me nuts, it dont shift when you need it. As far as the turbo diesels, when the turbo kicks in the power drops off at least for me, just the tourque isnt there, I just dont understand if you have IDI diesels and stick shift, Dont Change It, I'd like to see the diesel trucks how they were, idi diesels, 4 and 5 speeds, (why did the diesel industry change and all these new engines come out with emissions control)?

The market was (and still is) demanding more and more power from the diesel pickup, thus the electronic controlled turboed engines. Not really much different than the horsepower race we saw with factory muscle cars in the late 60's. To my way of thinking, if your power drops off when the turbo spools, then something isn't right.

So far as automatics, the driving public is really pretty lazy when it comes to shifting gears. I like manual trans, will until I get to where I can't work the clutch pedal anymore.

Another HUGE factor is big brother, as in the EPA and their emission mandates that the manufacturers have to meet. That is why you have emissions control...

if you are having issues with when/how your trans shifts you can do some searching on here or ask a question about it with detailed info on what it is doing. there are a number of things on these trucks that NEED to be right or the trans will not work right and it will be a major PITA. i also second that if your truck looses it nuts after the turbo lights then you have an issue? not sure why that would be. are the injectors and injection pump original? if so it is time to freshen the system up. sounds like you are getting the air from the turbo into the engine but you are not getting the fuel. your trans could also be slipping.

The IDI's are fun to drive, but once you tow something with a Cummins and the 6-speed auto you'll know why all the new technology is around. I would not even think about pulling my 30' gooseneck with my 9,000 pound tractor on it using any of my IDI trucks...

to 94IDITrubo7.3, My 7.3 idi is the only diesel I will ever run, it runs good and strong, starts without complaining, runs like a top 95,000 miles, IDI's FOREVER (all stock).

Now as to your question

turbocharged direct injected diesels are more efficient powerplants than our old iron plain and simple. So far all you have said that is fact and contributes to the conversation is that your truck runs strong and starts good which is all fine and dandy. My bro has an 05 cummins that runs stronger than any idi truck I have ever seen and starts just as good. Numbers dont lie and 400/800 stock is way better than the 200/400 that everyone dreams of getting out of a modded idi

As far as going to all automatic.... after speaking with several ford techs the main reason was warranty issues and the ability to monitor and control the loads on the motor. Auto companies surveyed it and almost 80% of their warranty work was coming from manual trans equipped trucks because of owners who dont know how to drive a manual and would shift low and slam the throttle. this put excess wear on everything. combine that with the fact that most drivers are lazy and dont feel like shifting gears and you have a truck that is a hassle for warranties and also yields lower sales. It was just cheaper to cut manuals out and save all of this money plus the cost of manufacturing frames, bodies, etc that will fit both manual and auto equipped trucks.

I am with you on the fact that I love my old iron and manual transmissions, but have you driven a new truck? The automatic in your truck does not even begin to compare to how well tuned the automatic in a new diesel is. After driving all three newer diesels with automatics I will say that I am in love with the newer automatics as a driver but as someone that could be servicing them I cant say that I would love them.

Ok just bought a 93 n/a I love it that it's all stock but imma turbo it cause no power after 2200 rpm an gas mileage. as for not towing heavy with an idi lol. I will be and when I finish my modded idi motor for my 89 it will be a heavy towing idi with plenty of power. I will in no way put down a Cummins there great no doubt about that. My 89 pulls as good or better than my step dads 01 cummins 4x4 3500 dually and I get better mileage loaded or not than he does he has an air filter thats it the rest is stock and his truck for 10k lol that's a joke he has all the miles I do and the inside is a crap hole and fallin apart as for pretty much every dodge rides like a horse wagon and the only good thing is it has a cummins in it. Anywas technology moves on and improves you like your truck we understand that that's why we all drive them an the technogly does move on as well as for idi powered trucks and I tend to make a high powered good mileage afordable new style redone idi to make idi comes back into play and go out with a BOOM as more new trucks come out every year

You might try adjusting the tps on the side of the injection pump to 1.2 volts idle with key on engine off

The truck I drive was my dad's and he didn't want anything to do with a turbo. I told him that the turbo is reliable, and better in every way. He bought an '06 turbo dodge, and loves it. So much in fact, that his idi just sat for several years, which is how I got it. Replacing the original IP and radiator at over 300k made it run much better, but that only helped in me getting the truck.

I know it is a ways off, but I look forward to getting that dodge one day...

I've ran newer diesels and they run fine, but I'm just used to the older equipment cause you grow up running the older stuff it's a way of life. Change is very hard for me to accept

Ya lol people tell me my truck is a JOKE and sucks and under powered. well the JOKER has now arose to put the JOKE on them and will see whos laughing. You will see my truck here shortly as im waiting to post it on here finished and let it be seen few have seen it and love it. I hope others will to Iv'e put everything I got into my truck and am extremly proud of what I have done and came up with to bring to the table.
