Try retarding the timing to 7*. I had to retard my Moose to 5.5* for emission purposes. It smoked light gray under load.

when i got a new(reman) pump from my local injection shop, they said they do turn up the ip pump to factory turbo specs. I asked them when i ordered mine what the differences was from a turbo pump and a n/a pump. they said the pump is turned up higher and that something else was different i think maybe a reservoir of some sort but i might be wrong with the reservoir i just remember them saying something about that.

A Moose pump has the best parts... The best rebuild shop... And the fuel curve has been changed. Asking much more and I have to tell you to ask Mel... The founder of the Moose pump products. Could you buy a Moose pump and then have a shop open it up and actually see whats differant... I really couldn't say. These cheap ebay pumps do not get the attention a Moose pump gets nor do they get the oem Stanadyne repair parts. You know... The good stuff. I personally would not know the differance in the good parts or the cheap parts. Pumps are not my speciality. I leave that to Mel and his builder.

it is a reman from bwd for a factory turbo idi

Before you go turning any screws on the IP, gotta know what IP you have.
Did you turn the fuel screw out, counterclockwise the two flats?
Is the original tag on the IP?
If so is it a DB2 5013? That is the IP for a 93 turbo.
Does the IP have a torque screw on it as in the pic below.

Who is bwd? Spell it out.

got a pyro or boost gauge, if so what are readings

are you sure there are no intake restrictions or boost leaks

if you are smoking black you are either lacking air or have to much fuel,

has the truck always done this or has it just recently started

does it clear up one you get up in the rpms

if it does not have a torque screw it is not a true turbo pump

This from Oregon Fuel injection. So you should be good with that IP.

7.3L Diesel Ford Factory Turbo E40D Automatic Rebuilt Fuel Injection Pump, fits 1993, 1994 OEM # F3TZ9A543A 1816340C91
DB2-5069.
I would reset the fuel back to where it was from BWD. The timing setting at 9 to 9.5 BTDC should be OK for a turbo.
The reason I asked if the IP has a torque screw, ATS says fuel can be adjusted that way, by backing it out 4 turns.
From what your saying, and what you have done, your not getting enough air flow..
How big is your exhaust system ?

Exhaust 3 in all the way out the back with no muffler

pyro is reading about 350-400 at 45 mph
idle is about 200-250

the smoke clears up at cruising speed (no load) but if i get on it a little it will smoke,it is not a heavy smoke but it does it pretty easily

it has just started doing it since the new inj., ip, and added a turbo.

I've got a 93 factory turbo. The IP is recently rebuilt. I can only assume it was set to factory specs but it dosen't smoke much. If you get on it at a low speed you can see some grey, but I can't see it at freeway speeds with the pedal to the floor.

These trucks are terrible at night when someones headlight is in your passenger mirror and you hit it.

I would think OFI would have calibrated it right but I don't have any personal experience with them. I wouldn't surprise me for a shop to assume the fuel setting was at factory setting when they got it to rebuild while it may have been turned up by someone in the past.

Sounds like if you don't have an air restriction that if you're smoking under partial throttle the torque screw may need to be messed with.

Im quite interested in this post, and to see what the out come is. I just installed a freshly rebuilt pump back in april. and am having identical issues. ive got the timing set to 7.5 btdc. my egts are around 900 - 950 pulling a hill empty in fith gear. i was going to turn the fuel down two flats. I thought it might be my turbo needing a rebuild and not spooling up the way it should. i can get 8 psi of boost but only if at the very end of the rev. like at 55-60 mph in 4th gear. and i can only hit 8 psi in fith gear if im going highway speed like 70 75 mph. so my assumption is if my turbo was working the way it should it would only smoke a little until my turbo spooled up. Thats just a guess though. maybe your having the same issues and your turbo isnt at 100 percent.

OLDBULL8 whats the difference between the torque screw in your picture, than the fuel screw behind the plate on the side of the pump. Thats how i have always adjusted the fuel was using the allen wrench behind that plate. is the torque screw a better way to adjust
