I noticed that E85 and E30 are for sale near me and are much less than reg unleaded ($2.99 for E85). So in an effort to reduce costs, what is the feasibility of using 7.5% E85 instead of 7.5% RUG?

If this is going to bee too rough on the pump ill pass. It was just something i was thinking about on the way home.....

I remember some other guys talking about ethanol mix in the gas they use, I think it might be kinda tuff on IP's. It would make sure any water that's in the mix would "go through" better.
The last couple batches I've mixed up been using blended diesel, (60/40, 60% #2 and 40% #1) with wmo. After I get it all mixed good, it does gravity flow out. My ending batch was 60% diesel fuel & 40% wmo, and diesel fuel was the above mix. The blended diesel is $4.13 right now.
I see your point about cost of mix, the ethanol :dunno, I think it depends how long you use it.

I'd do it. I sometimes mix with rug which around these parts, has ethanol in it. There is a long article on turbodieselregister.com about the no no of running gasoline and how it cokes injector tips. The article seemed legit. That said it doesn't bother me too much, at 240 for a set of injectors the cost savings of using injector prematurely isn't a deal killer for me. Kerosene is still my favorite thinning agent, but yea it does suck paying $4 a gallon for it. -cuss

Maybe i should have given more detail... Yes, i'm thinning WMO. I add 17-18% kerosene and 7-8% RUG normally, but i'm trying to see what affect it would have to use E85 instead of RUG.

What are the property differences between RUG and E85? Same flash point?

I did some reading and it seems that e85 has a much higher octane than reg gas. Another place I was reading was that octane is the inverse of cetane ratings, so the e85 will be harder to light than RUG.

So final consensus on my part is I'll stick with RUG...

I wasn't going to write about this, because the wound is too deep...and still fresh.
But now I have to. Do not mix e85 in your tank unless your ride is set up for it. A
couple weeks ago, I got the bright idea to mix e85 in my tank.

Towcat advised against it, but I did it anyway.

The ride I put it in was sweet. It was an '85 cutlass with a stealth upgrade from a
307 to a 403. The engine was balanced & blueprinted, with custom pistons and
a custom adjustable valve train. I kept all the smog crap on it...and that is saying
something. An '85 with a carb has lots of smog hoses, wires, and...well, crap. But
I kept all the stuff on it and it continued to pass smog every two years.

Why it died, I will never know. New year's night, I was driving home from dinner with
my folks, and the engine quit on the freeway. It had been running fine up 'till that point.
Still remaining in the tank was 4-5 gallons of 50/50 e85/RUG. I attempted to restart it
after rolling to a stop on the side of the road. I immediately heard a "pop", followed by
massive white smoke and orange flame coming from under the hood. I barely got out
with my wallet, phone, keys, & the 2.5 gallons of gasoline in the tank before the whole
thing burned to the ground.

The hood is...gone. The alternator bracket is...almost gone. The front tires are gone.
The upper control arms are buckled. The upholstery on the *rear* seat is half-melted,
and half-burned. Get the picture?

I realize that what is being discussed here is mixing ethanol with diesel, and not with
gas. I have a feeling they won't mix well anyway. Even so, I don't know the failure mode
for my disaster. What happened may be able to happen even with a diesel. I'm
terrified of the stuff. You couldn't pay me to put it in my tank, gasoline or diesel.

Learn from my mistake. Don't do it.

e85 is some really vicious stuff. It will eat the hell out of rubber and some synthetic rubber products. If your fuel system is not set up for it, don't do it. I've picked up enough burn jobs over to years to know not to go there. If you do play with it, see my sig line especially the last three lines.

Well i've already decided to not use e85.

Thanks for the heads up guys. :)

Glad to hear,

I can't imagine how the rest of the rubber in the system will take to E85. The current 10% ethanol blend in the gas now is wrecking havoc with my Mercedes and its mechanical fuel injection.

holy crap Bob, sounds like a pressure line might have eaten through and be spraying fuel. once that happenes it does not take muck to light it off, sorry to hear about your trouble.

i like to stick with diesel and kero as a thinning agent, i have added a "small" amount of gas on some thick stuff but it scares me to much.

I don't go over 8% gas. I've heard you can run as much as 20%, but that would scare me.

I mostly thin with K-1....
