Brad,

At least they are from a Ford. I have seen some Cabriolets that had cheby pickup taillights, (the little ones the late 70's early 80's body). I have seen a few that actually had the Ford van taillights..... just a few...

Reading even uses, to this day the Slantnose taillights on the fiberglass utility beds....

The problem with E350 Cabriolets ...

The GVWR usually exceeds 10,000 pounds

Which means you need a CDL to drive one - even empty

Because they are not titled as an rv

Best to check to door tag from the final assembly
for the GVWR

Jim

When do I need a Ohio CDL instead of my regular Ohio Drivers License?
A Ohio CDL is required if you operate any of the following CMV's . . .
1. A vehicle with a manufacturer's gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of more than 26,000 lbs.

here is where you might be confused:

2. A vehicle towing a unit with a manufacturer's GVWR of more than 10,000 lbs. when the GCWR exceeds 26,000 lbs.

edit,
i agree with snapon.the things ugly lol.
not to mention,no fun to work on,or ungodly expensive to pay someone to work on it for ya.:D

Exactly,.It allays bugged me to see a conversion like this and have Chebby tailights, or vice versa,..

The E-350 GVW is basically the same as F350, It is still a one ton Ford Dually Chassie, being a Cabriolet doesn't change that. No need for a CDL.

As far as Ugly,...It is certainly Dated, and the aesthetics are bad, but I would love to update one of these rigs. I have had 3 of them on the lot over the years, everyone has sold rather quickly and all had bad aesthetics. But it would be cool to restore one in today colors. I think the body shape is cool as is the practicality of the van for the family.

Eye of the beholder,..but I would drive one.;Sweet

I can use my international 9900 to pull a 5th wheel without a cdl if I strip the dot numbers off and ditch the comercial plate. The old man has a 94 freightliner to pull his 40 footer, he gave up his cdl when he retired.

Try that argument with Vehicle Enforcement ...

I know the law ...

If you operate a tow vehicle with a GVWR of 10,001 or greater

AND/OR

If your combined weight for tow vehicle & trailer is 26,001 or greater

You need a CDL - health card - log book - stop at scales

You can be driving an empty tow vehicle & towing an empty trailer....

If the GVWR of either exceeds those capacities ....

You need a CDL - health card - log book - stop at scales

Tow vehicles registered as RV's and some farm vehicles are exempt

Federal Motor Law
That is which supercedes all state laws ...

Try explaining your interpretation to Ohio Vehicle Enforcement

You can find them at the rest areas with portable scales when
you stop to take a **** ....

I am on the road every day - in all lower 48 states

Some states , like Wyoming - require that you weigh if your
combined GVWR of tow vehicle & trailer exceeds 8000 pounds

WHat he said. I would say a lot of the people on here are in constant violation of the law. If you tow any trailer over 10,000lbs, you NEED a class A CDL, unless it is farm or RV

Was "Cabroilet" a company that offered this conversion? Or was "Cabroilet" what they called this conversion? Some places i find say it was a conversion by "Cabroilet" while others say it is a "Cabroilet" done by Centurion.

I know the law too. Cdl only applies to comercial vehicles (my dually has a passenger car plate). Been doing this for 14 years and I am 3rd generation trucker, plus my mom was 2nd generation oregon dot before she retired. I used to use my old 9400 to pull my 5er until I bought my dually, now it will take over that duty.

Oh ok. Google doesn't turn up much information for either of the companies, guess the market for these wasn't quiet as big as the regular truck market LOL

You are WRONG. The laws changed about 5 years ago.

ANY trailer that is registered over 10,000lbs, needs a CLASS A to be towed. PERIOD. Doens't matter if it is a station wagon towing it or a Perterbilt tractor.
That is FEDERAL, which means it applies to EVERY state

According to Page 3, if I'm reading it correctly, you can legally drive a single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,000 lbs or less and legally tow a single vehicle with a GVWR (not GCWR) of 10,000 lbs or less. I took a screen shot and am attaching it to this post for easier reference.

This is intrastate in CA; if you're going interstate, the rules may be different; I'm not 100% sure. But, as I'm understanding it, you could legally be driving a truck weighing 25,999 lbs and towing a trailer weighing 9,999 lbs with a Class C license in CA, or a tow vehicle weighing anything with a trailer weighing 9,999 lbs with a Class B.

FWIW...

Correct. If that trailer registration breaks the 10,000lb mark, you need an A license .

And if the truck is registered for 26,001lbs or more you need a Class B

Or personal use(I.E. not for profit), at least thats what the DOT told me when I called to register my homebuilt trailer. 26,000 pound thing still applied though...
