What mileage to expect CCLB idi turbo zf5?

I have searched but not found much on mileage info. I really, really want an idi.

I'm looking at a 94 crewcab with zf5 and turbo or 85 reg cab na/t-19.

Rears are unknown on the trucks, but wanted some info on mileage. Won't be doing much towing, just running down the highway mostly. I drive conservatively and usually right at the speed limit or slightly below. What can I expect.

Also, is there any mileage gain from adding a turbo to an n/a motor?

I know there are a lot of variables, but was wondering what you guys were seeing.

My mileage increased with the turbo as i'm in the go pedal far less to get up to speed and stay at speed.

My CCLB 4x4 has 37's with 3.55's. i'm at 16/20, 22 with the right mix and if i slow down on the highway.

I think the N/A 6.9 reg cab would probably get the better fuel mileage, however the crewcab long bed is really nice in other ways...four real doors, 5 speed, turbo. Personally I didn't see much change in fuel economy with the turbo for good or bad. I sure wouldn't be planning on any more than 13 city or 17 highway for purposes of determining if I can afford it. Most people get right at or better than that...many get better, very few get worse.

I'm not too worried about 'affording it' as I drive my work van home and dont pay the fuel for that. My current truck is 1/2 ton and gets somewhere between 8-10 on the highway and probably doesn't get driven 1000 miles a year. This would be driven more, but mostly highway.

The 94 has overdrive & a turbo, huge plus for a diesel. Plus its a crew cab! A 94 Turbo'd crew cab with a ZF5 will be an awesome truck.

I've got a standard cab & a crew cab. I never drive the standard cab because it's so small. The crew cab has so many more conveniences over the standard cab that it's all I drive.

Mileage:

- 88 NA 2wd Crew Cab without overdrive, 13 city / ~16 highway

- 87 Turbo 2wd Standard Cab with Overdrive, 15 city / 20-22 on highway (23 once)

Both trucks are C6 auto's. Without overdrive, the standard cab would be much less

Whatever trans/gear combo you come up with, keeping your cruise around 1800 RPM or less is going to be key to good milage. Our Lady Moose with ZF5, Geav Vendors (provides for double overdrive) and 4.10's gets about 16 -17 MPG empty. A crew cab dually is a heavy truck to be sure. Towing a 30' 5th wheel, it gets 12 to 14.

Before the IP started taking a dump, mine with 4.10's was getting about 18mpg @ 60 mph going on the flat interstate.

I think the OD is the way to go!

I usually cruise at 65 or 70, and I do well to get get over 15. On my work commute I drive 60 and get about 16-17. When I first got the truck it got 18 at 70. I know my timing has to be off, and I have a leak in my up pipes, so I need to do some work to get it better. Many guys here have their trucks in great shape and get 18-20, so your new truck might not do that well until you do some work to it. I've got 4.10 gears by the way.

That is true, they don't let any grass grow beneath their feet! I found though, with a flat bed and beat up truck they move over and away from me in any direction once they get a look at it.

I wish I could get 19! Lately mines been getting about 12-13 on the highway. Right after I did the trans swap I was getting 18-19, but I can't seem to get there now.

5 speed and 4.10s with normal drivin and minimal ****** on it I get 14 city and about 17 cruising at 55-60, kick that up to 70-75 and its about 14 put a load(three horse gooseneck with small dressing room) behind it at 65 and it goes to 12-13

Yup, thats for sure

I like to set my cruise at 65mph. Let them pass me all I want, I like fuel mileage. Most of the time they pass me doing 70-75 and then we all slow down due to a wreck or construction, so they really dont gain anything.

The Logger, in signature, always got 14-15 around town, a best of 19.8 on an extended highway run. Very heavy loads IE: 9 ton trailer, would bring me into the 10- 12mpg range on average, for the whole tank, not just the time towing.

It's weird here, if you go just the speed limit, they ride your tailgate, but go 2-3 mph under the speed limit and they pass you before even being on your butt. That is, unless we're talking about the a-hole in the dodge 1500 on ten mile bridge rd today. Or the a-hole in the d-max on west loop 820 north bound. Or the...maybe it is me!
