Ive had this arguement plenty of times. If your living paycheck to paycheck, driving a 20 year old vehicle is not for you. Any major repair comes up and your screwed. A person is better of bite'in the bullet and taking out a loan or spending the extra cash on a newer reliable vehicle that isnt gona leave them stranded or force them to compramise a repair.

There is no such thing as a cheap vehicle, especially when you mis work on account of it not running(not to mention the stress that comes along with it). I have bought so a many "cheap" vehicles already, and I ALWAYS end up spending just as much on it as I would have on one that was clean and ready to go.

Times are tough, but the one thing I would never skimp on is the integrity of a vehicle. Its a safety factor, not only to me but others on the road around me. Ive seen some jig-rigged, un-safe stuff on the road and it makes me sick that I gotta share the road with stuff like that. It puts my life and my childrens life in jeopordy. Now I understand why some states have mandatory safety inspections, its unreal what some people will chance driving around in!! Plain and simple, it costs money to properly keep a vehicle up.

Anyway, enough ranting, In dy's defense, I have done the same thing. The O.E. caps actually seem to be better quality anyway:dunno

Good times! LOL I'll hurry and throw in my 2 cents before its too late! :yell:

I've had great success with the stock gray caps and new hose/O-rings. We have a crap load of viton 111's at work (free for me) and a huge supply of petroleum jelly (also free). For poops and giggles I took all the caps (on my old 86 and 91) and inspected them all with a magnifying glass and found the surface to be very clean and smooth after a good washing. So far so good and if they do fail I'll do it all over again. I actually keep a full set of spares in the glove box :D

Davey I'm all for doing things correctly the first time, but sometimes the only way you can do it in a pinch is good ol african engineering. When I bought my truck the sheathing on the battery cables was falling off. Instead of spending 200 bucks on cables I just wraped the old ones with about a mile of electrical tape. They worked good until one day a ball valve on my coolant filter ate through the tape on the positive cable and about started a fire. It was my fault for not putting a chafe guard there and if I had the cable still would start my truck every morning. Heck I still have the black cables, although i do want to upgrade to a larger size. Dont let these people tell you nothin. I'd rather have my skills and inginuity with no money than have money to pay people to fix my problems

OK... I know this is the internet and me saying this probably wont change anything, but I'll give it a go. The reason that we effectively have "2 sides" forming over this topic is not because of "what" is being said, but because of "how" it's being said. As a pastor I deal with this sort of issue all of the time. In most cases you have two or more individuals that have a misunderstanding because of the tone or language used in conveying an idea.

Diesel Brad - I am not sure how you meant your original statement of "Really, 40 bucks is going to break you?", but it sounds as if you are saying "man you must be pretty poor to not be able to afford $40 in parts". The reason I am addressing this issue rather than just letting it die is because you followed up by asking the question "did I say something wrong" Now you may not have meant it to be rude (I prefer to think that you didn't), and you may be thinking "why would that offend someone". Lets take a similar statement that may make it clearer.

Imagine that someone came up to you and said "really, your wife is that ugly"; or "really, your that big of a moron"... these statements would be considered incredibly offensive. Now I am not suggesting for a minute that what you said was even in the realm of these statements, but the same principle applies. We should all say things in our head and even out loud before posting them directed toward someone else. The way that you worded your original statement to Dyoung seems to imply a couple of things
1. That you don't have to worry about insignificant sums of money like $40.
2. That there must be something wrong with Dyoung because he does.

Now like I said earlier, this may have not be your intent, but you seemed to use some fairly strong wording towards another member. There is nothing wrong with expressing your opinion, but please remember that even though this is the internet, words can still just as easily tear someone down as they can build someone up. That's why I like a family oriented forum like oilburners... less drama and more encouragement and helpful ideas.

Mods - I hope that me expressing these ideas doesn't offend anyone or make your job harder, have an awesome new year's eve!

Well put pastor.;Sweet;Sweet I am guilty of saying things wrong, and I still have been married for 25 years. it is so easy to take things out of context, on that note, dyoung, if you think you may need some orings for another rig let me know, they are cheap, I think .06 in 1000 quantity.

You did more than me!

My return lines were leaking and all I had to do was put on some new o-rings (already had them sitting around)

And guess what? They don't leak! :rotflmao

But I hear ya man, $40 can buy a lot of little things when you need them, rather then spending it all on one big thing.

type4 are those viton o rings that are .06 per 1000? They charge like .20 each for regular o rings at the part store!
