splash enough water into the snorkel to reach the air filter and all but choke the engine...
Natures own water injection?! LOL:rotflmao

hard to find a balance between cold air ram and safety from rain/splashing. gonna try my new intake out and post results but the old setup i was seeing around 300F for egt when i was gentle. romping 700 was easy. empty of course. thats if my banks pyro is accurate at all though

Great help! Thanks for the reply's ;Sweet

Gauging the responses here I decided to installed the snorkel off of my 85 parts truck and it was a piece of cake. I wish there wasn't so much crap in front of the inlet, but looks like it should be better than the original one (later style) for getting a little more cool air :dunno

I live in the third driest state in the lower 48 so I'm not really worried about water consumption, but if there is a time it is questionable I'll just disconnect the hose for the time being. Thanks again.

Here's a couple pics. Its hard to tell whats going on unless you are physically there to see the comparison. The hood basically shuts right on top of the original unit where as the early model collects it air from behind the driver side headlight.

Stock intake:

86 and earlier style:

Both intakes allow cool air to enter the housing, but neither of which really provide a ram air effect. I'm thinking that I will cut out and modify the section directly below the headlight and install some thin plate to give some airflow and provide a little "ram air". As for egt's my pyro is broken and I have no desire to change it  :puke: I take that back... I want to replace it--someday LOL

No EGT's sorry, don't have a gauge, but we did put 220 miles on Henry today spraying merrily away with three .015" nozzles @70psi while wading through some typical tropical Florida frog chokers... It seemed to make him happy, as he never skipped a beat. The cheesy Advance-Discount hood scoop ram-cool air plus water/alcohol injection is giving me 14.11mpg @ 2700rpm for 70mph with 4.10's and a worn out heat soaked IP, no HHO at the moment as the bed was loaded to overflowing and into the over cab airstream with at least a thousand pounds of household items (moving my daughters room mate). I can only try to imagine the amount of water it would take to choke a 7.3 at speed, and I have to say that I'm very happy with the performance of my homemade system since I replaced all the nozzles with the .015's. As you can see, any rain that goes in, goes in.

Here is what I did on my 90. A 4" to 3" PVC pipe reducer at the intake horn does the trick. Put a bead of RTV on the 4" end for a seal, and a couple of metal tabs on each side to fasten it to the horn. Used a 4" aluminium dryer vent, don't stretch it, and a filter from Azone. Drilled a bunch of holes in the rad bracket where it hangs down.

Ya'll guys are going nuts with them homemade cold-air setups, it's awesome! I actually had the drier vent for a while but it shook apart, shortly after that I found the 6.9 setup in a U-Pull-It and I've been rather happy with it...

Wow stupid me  I went for a drive today, and I must say having the snorkel made all the difference. More low end grunt, far less black smoke and I was able to build boost quicker (I didn't get more psi it just comes on sooner). I pulled my stock snorkel off the day I bought my truck thinking that I would increase airflow but I found that was a mistake.

Pulling the snorkel off of my old 6.5TD gave me about 400 more horse power (give or take) back in the day, but I think Ford did their homework on this design--you guys were right its better to leave it on :D

Wow.. I had done the same thing when I bought mine . I just tossed it back on, and what a difference! Now I'm going to swap my '85's setup on there.. The one that feeds from behind the headlight. ;Sweet;Sweet

That was taken by my seat "o" the pants meter which probably needs to be re-calibrated :rotflmao That said words can not describe what a higher flow intake and exhaust will do for a 6.5TD :D

I ran a temp test between the factory snorkel and no snorkel. The factory snorkel is a lot better than none at all. The incoming air was about 140* all the time with no snorkel. With the OEM tube, the temp dropped to about 80* while traveling. It was 70* when I was doing my testing.
