solid state controller help

Hi all. I mentioned in a post recently that the glow plug controller on my 86 recently died. I went down to the international dealer today and bought a wiring harness for the later style glow plugs.
In the next week or so, I will be buying some new glow plugs and a controller.
I read the tech article that explains how to wire in the late style controller but really couldnt understand what it was saying. What would help me, is if someone could post a picture of a later style controller and explain what wires on the controller go where and then I'll run my wires accordingly from there.
I also read somewhere that the glow plug light on the new controller works by a ground type setup, is this correct?
I would really appreciate some guidance on this, thanks.

O.k. blackdawg and typ4. The harness ran me 99 bucks +tax The part #is 1807648C94

They didnt have what some guys call the "upgrade kit" so I dont know what the hell some of these new wires do. They wanted 270.00 for the harness and the solid state controller. I decided to wait on the controller, because I can get one cheaper elswhere.

I thought the stock wiring for the solid state was kinda dismal and lowered voltage to the plugs?

I did what you want to do I'll see if I can post pics tomorrow unless someone else beats me to the punch. Nothing beats the IH connectors on that harness, and I tried damn near everything I could get my hands on and hacked the old 6.9 harness. It really is very simple and effective. I don't want to jinx myself but I swapped controllers in fall 2004 with one from Oldmisterbill and 8 new Beru GPs and I have had to change 2 in 5+ years starts great whether its 20 or 100.

Perhaps so, but the controller is calibrated to work with that wiring. It has a current sensing technology to detect when the plugs are hot, so if you change the wiring, you will affect the cycle times.

Perhaps so, but the controller is calibrated to work with that wiring. It has a current sensing technology to detect when the plugs are hot, so if you change the wiring, you will affect the cycle times.

And because of that, I would not call it a very "robust" design. Any connection problems and the cycle time is reduced, which means a no or hard start. The best thing I did to my 89 was to wire it with a manual pushbutton. I had 3 bad glowplugs, and with the pushbutton it still started. There is no way the factory controller would have worked correctly with that many glowplugs bad, and even with all the glowplugs good, it still refused to cycle correctly sometimes. I could go out and unplug and then plug back in the glowplug connectors on each glowplug, and it would start working again for a couple of weeks. The stock controller is just too touchy on a truck with 20 year old wiring.

if all the wores are good and everything is grounded right and all the glow plugs are good, then the new style is a great system, heck even the old 6.9 style is good when its right, until the controler goes out and toast all 8 plugs that was my only problem with it

No dont remove it. I would like to see a picture or drawing of the new style controller and where the wires attached to it go. I can also use the tech article to help me along.
It would be easier for me to start at the new controller and work my wires out from there.
I also would like to know the name of the switch behind the alternator that is refered to as HCPA.

vegas. I have rewired a couple older trucks to the new style plugs and controller. I have both style trucks here at the house. I will get a couple pics of both tonight and explain what goes where if no one beats me to it.

I do remember the old style controller turns the wts light on backwards from the new style. I just used a relay that is switch from the new style controller to activate the wait to start (was easier for me than rewireing the light in the dash panel).

While you are at it I would recommend remote mounting the gp controller to get it off the vibrating engine and further from heat, It should live longer that way. My truck ate two when I put the turbo on till russ clued me in that I was cooking the poor things. moved it and all was good (till I shorted a gp wire and let the smoke genie out of this one)
