My experience with heated wmo is relatively good. Before I was heating my pickup and lines before the filter I had a couple of situations where the engine would rev and unrev at stops after heavy acceleration in the cold - seemingly a fuel starved engine. The oil I was using at the time was well filtered and dewatered, but of questionable provenance, e.g. it might have had random solvents in it.
I filter down to 1 micron and run the heated oil through a 6 micron Goldenroad 6 micron water block.
I now use oil from more reputable sources that I know is from well maintained vehicles. I can get my wmo to about 120-130 degrees before it hits the filter. I've timed my engine to what seems appropriate around 9 btdc. Runs like it's on diesel, with seemingly more power, but higher EGTs - except for the smell and the occasional surge in power - very rare but it happens - it's also momentary, like the pickup hits a strata of oil in the tank thats easier to pump or something.
I've pulled my injectors and gps after a few thousand miles on 100% wmo - the injectors look like they did when I put them in, and I lost a few gps before I properly timed my IP. Other than that seems like everything is OK. I'm going to add a 30 plate FPHE somewhere along the frame rail when I have enough scratch to do it after or around the holidays.
That said I just batered my way to a 100 gallon transfer tank so I can make my 1100 mile drive legs without stopping for fuel now which is very cool given that Wyoming, Montana and Idaho for some reason have ridiculously expensive diesel. Those poor ******** are paying 2.90/gallon and down here it can be had for about $2.25/gallon. Free is even better!
I don't even go through fuel filters very often either. I end up changing them preemptively to avoid having to stop in places not of my choosing to swap them. Given I get them for less than $5 on sale it doesn't hurt too much. I must mention I have a 2 tank setup and that I religiously start and stop on #2 dosed heavily with PS or DK.
