I talked to my night shift foreman who worked for the local IH truck dealership for 25 years. He said the gas oil, hydraulic and ATF wouldn't hurt the IDI at all but he wouldn't burn used diesel oil - just too much soot. I should have my setup geared buy next week with any luck. Time to start scrounging some oil...LOL.....I guess I'll have to see if fuel hit the $1.40 mark like they said it was supposed to at midnight.

I have run straight WMO, ATF, gear lube and never had any ill affects from it. I had even ran a mixture up to 50% WMO/Diesel in my moms 99 Cummins.

I am now playin with a new way of making fuel. I am taking WVO and WMO and cutting them down with a certain amount of gas and kero and running it. We have been running this mixture in my friends 03 Duramax for the last year and half.

Only down side we have found so far is the fuel filter lasts about 15k and the mileage dropped about 1 mpg. Also your truck will put out some black smoke and smell like french fries, lol! Other then that I would say its great! And the best thing is, it only costs around $.80 a gallon.

Something I kind of worry about... when a shop drops a oil pan or axle cover, they usually clean it off with carb/brake cleaner... how will that effect or contaminate the oil???

Yeah, gear oil would be way too thick - probably couldn't even filter it down to 3 microns without heating it up a couple of hundred degrees first.

If I had access to a reasonable source of it, I'd be looking a lot harder at this for myself. The only problem I've really heard of using it in an IDI is that if you DON'T filter it well enough, the tiny bits of metal in it (say 10-20 micron size) will wear out the injector spray nozzles a lot faster.

I'm thinking of grabbing a 55 gallon plastic drum and just start collecting my own motor oil. Heck I already have around 5-10 gallons in various jugs sitting around. If I could cheaply filter it well enough, I think I'd give burning some a try. I mean, I've already paid for it once...

No gear oil is not too thick if blended if I get some gear oil I just dump it in my mixing barrel with the WMO & blend 70/30 summer 50/50 winter.

So I basically mount it lower than the oil tank and just let gravity take over? Should I pre filter it with a 10 micron or such filter?

gravity feed is what i have so far but it is SLOW it can take several hours to do a gallon. thats why i am adding some air pressure which from playing around made it flow like a faucete.

i dont bother prefiltering unless i get some leaves or knock some crude in changing my oil. i just typically use a paint strainer then but the first filter is a 10 mic and the second is a 1 mic.

That's what I'm faced with in the morning according to the news:eek: :puke: .....Crooked ********.-cuss ....My truck is due for a fillup too. Now I'm putting my WMO setup plans into full speed ahead. I have a dual filter head here - the F-inlaw is taking it to work with him in the morning at CAT to fit it for 2 micron fuel filters. I'll buy an air tank at work to use as a pressure tank to put the oil through the filters. I'm going to fill some jerry cans with clean oil for my bi-weekly fillup. My buddy with the transmission shop is going to save me some clean tranny fluid if I provide the buckets. What kind of ratio are you mixing with the ATF??? I won't be burning diesel oil - too much soot but ATF and gas engine waste oil is a go.;Sweet I bet I'll get some wierd looks at the gas stations.

Stuart....was thinking of something like whats on page 41 of the hydraulic section (Pages 1-50) you can download here http://downloads.princessauto.com/?Lid=E

It's a filtering station with dual filter heads and that can be expanded to 6 filter heads...may make a nice portable setup for bulk setups....Just a thought I had.

I plan on looking at it locally and seeing what is involved in duplication of said unit perhaps.....doubt one could build it for a reasonable price though...might end up being easier to purchase the unit.

But if you're filtering it down to 2 or 3 microns, won't that take most/all of the soot out too? About the best source I can think of free WMO right now is what I'm dumping out of my crankcase - at 10 quarts every 3000 miles it adds up. Especially since I've already paid for it!

I'm still on the fence when it comes to diesel WMO.....Haven't made up my mind on it yet. I suspect my filtration system will cost me $100 when complete. I'm getting an air tank tommorow. Princess auto sells a 9 gallon air pig for $40....Weld a large nipple/valve on top to fill it and a bung on the bottom to let the fluid come out. It already has a bung to pressurize it with.

I have two used CAT engine fuel filter heads, one with a 10 micron filter and one with a 2 micron....They will be plumbed in series from the tank to a shut off valve......The valve will control air flow to the gas cans for the filtered oil....I'm thinking regulated 20-30psi of air pressure will be enough to move things through the filters quickly. The two filter heads and filters cost me $40 today. I'll fab a strap to go around the air tank and mount the filter heads to that making it a mobile unit for easy storage under the bench.....Simple and yet effective. I'll let you know how it works for me and post some picks. Should be done Monday or Tuesday.

Just a thought I had when I built my filtering tank was to have a valve at the very bottom and then another one slightly above the bottom. The idea is that sediments will go to the bottom, especially water. All I have to do is let a little oil out of the very bottom to let all the junk out and then use the other outlet that is slightly above the bottom to supply the filter with oil. I still need to get some pictures! I'm quite proud of my creation!
