I stumbled on to this video by Gale Banks which was very interesting to watch. I never really payed too much attention to the current crop of modern diesels out there. This was amazing to watch. No wonder it costs thousands of dollars to work on the new trucks, and why they are so crazy expensive. I appreciate Gale's discussion on the newer diesels, but I'll stick to my 7.3, thank you very much.

At 22:15 of the video my ears perked up. Those of you who might be building exhaust manifolds should listen to what he is talking about here. I felt that was a very useful nugget of Gale Banks Knowledge that I plan to file away for future reference.

I plan to keep mine as long as parts are still available to keep it running.
If I still had my 87 F250 I'd probably say the same. Yeah I still have the "Smurf" van right now, but I am still trying to sell it. It's not practical to keep. It's way too big to keep just to drive my mom around, since she totaled her car in late June.

Especially since a week ago, I bought a 1993 Isuzu pickup for $1500 with new custom fabricated A/C hoses (using the old lines) by a local shop and has cold blowing A/C. That's worth $500 by itself in the south. It's meant to replace her car, for transporting her and hauling stuff, if needed. It has a 2.3L 4cyl with 135,*** miles, 5spd manual. I'm changing the timing belt first thing before it gets driven, since it's an interference engine. Needs also water pump due to this one leaking (it's under the timing cover, so I'm doing it too) and needs it a lot of vac line work due to the smog pump being deleted, and stuff being left wide open all over the place. It might be best to spend $400+ on a new weber carb kit that deletes the dozen vacuum lines, all related to the factory smog equipment. And yes it has a carburetor! and mechanical fuel pump. These did through 1994. It's as simple of a truck as you could get in the 1990s, I'd argue moreso than IDIs since doesn't need an injection pump. Oh, it has manual steering too.

It has a rebuilt title, but it seems it has since December 1993. It didn't stay clear very long, since this was built in August 1993.

That's a pretty nice looking truck. I had an '89 Nissan for a few years. It was kind of a POS, but it got me around. The only thing that I miss about that is the mileage.

I'm not surprised. When I was in Iraq as a civilian contractor in '04-'05, we had a nice looking Nissan bus. That thing ran terribly. It was a 2001 and was told that it had a carb and POINTS distributor. I can't confirm that since I didn't look at the engine. When it got the the point that it couldn't even make it over a speed bump, I got out, started walking, and never attempted to ride that thing again. We had already had to push it off of the side of the road and I was NOT about to do that again!

Sometimes I think of something Big Bart once said about at some point we'll be trading in our idis for 7.3 powersmokes......I guess because of the natural progression of things. Every now and then an OBS powerstroke cowboy Cadillac turns up on the cheap because they don't want to pay for the high pressure oil pump to be replaced, but the truck is legit other than that.

If I did go 7.3 powerstroke, it would have to be ZF-5.....I can only handle one electronic nightmare at a time.

And I know most of y'all are "turbocharged" on your IDI, but if you loose your turbo, you can still go! A powerjoke won't move without a turbo....... that's a pretty good reason to stay IDI for the time being.

Hi in the Cascades, Nearly- Redmond,Oregon
I plan on driving mine as long as I can, so long as Oregon and Washington don't become the next Commieformia....
YES!!!!
And I worry about Oregon going STATE WIDE about all this getting SMOGG CHECKED
cr-a-pppp!!!!
Makes me sick when I keep seeing all these "REALLY SMART GUYS" taking off from stop sign or green lite and HAMMER DOWN filling the road full of chocking black smoke....... letting the world know they got a POWERFUL HE-MAN RIG!!!!
If they want to fill the road full of smoke.....Then go out into the country somewhere & SMOKE THINGS UP!!!!
Don't do it downtown where the GOVERNOR and all those GREEN LEAF PICKER FOLKS are watching & passing new rules & laws!!!!!

Hollar & scream at me bout my thoughts......but I'm not ready for all this SMOGG checking & passing stuff over here in Central Oregon like it is over there round Portland & other places.....& Commieformia......!!!!

I think it's a fairly safe assumption to say that with each passing year there are fewer and fewer pre-smog diesels on the road which might mean it's not worth the headache for the powers-that-be to try and ban them. I see far fewer pre-smog gasser trucks now than 15-20yrs ago. I would be much more concerned if I owned a modern DPF diesel since there's a greater effect if the smog laws get tightened on them.

Problem with the idi motors will probably be lack of support with quality parts. Already seeing no good mechanical lift pumps available, and as far as I know, the only injectors available (other than from the few shops that are enthusiasts in these old engines) are chinese, and already less available over the last couple years.

Makes me wish I would have kept all those boxes of injector cores. Still have between 20 to 30 ip cores though.

California was very generous about diesel emissions. They waited 22 years longer to begin smog checking diesels. So, all IDIs are smog exempt in California.

I missed that opportunity while the seat was out. The carpet is good enough and it will clean up - my next repair will be the cracked dash. Last time I checked LMC had the right color on back order.
