CDD injection line issues

I ran into a frustrating issue tonight and I wanted to see if anyone else has heard of it. My #1 injection hardline has been messed up and leaking for a while, so I bit the bullet and got a whole new set from Classic Diesel Designs. I was warned ahead that new lines aren’t bent accurately and will need to be massaged to fit, so I was mentally prepared for that (although it was super frustrating because they were all way off). My real issue is that now that they are all installed, my air cleaner won’t fit. The new lines are about 3/4 to 1 inch taller than the old ones, and my air cleaner hits them before it can seat. For comparison, here’s the old #4 line next to the new one. Look how much lower the peak of the old one is.

Are these lines only for turbo builds? I didn’t see that anywhere on the website. Has anyone else installed a CDD line set on an N/A without this issue? Maybe I got a bad set and should reach out.

Or is this a sign that I should install a turbo…

Also, I did not re-install the timing sensor adapter on the new #1 line. Since the line set said it would work on the 6.9 and the 7.3 I figured it wasn’t needed. There were no instructions on the website or in the box, so can anyone confirm that I did the right thing there? I’ll reach out to CDD tomorrow, but I’ll be driving the truck to work first so if anyone can let me know about the timing sensor I’d appreciate it.

I bought a set off E-Bay, only for the Line Clamps, new line
set cost the same as just the Line Clamps.
Iam sure all the one`s on E-Bay and CDD are made in China.

Later I`ll be out in the shop and will check the lines I have against
the old one`s I have.

On my 6.9, the Air Cleaner would rub on one of my hard lines
If I didn`t put a piece of rubber hose on it. And these are the original hard Lines.

Yeah I definitely think so. I was hoping the CDD ones would be different, but the line nuts are 17mm instead of 5/8 which tells me they’re probably the same as the $40 sets on Amazon. At least CDD has a 5 year warranty on theirs.

There's a lot of other info on here talking about the timing adapter, long story short (from what I have read on here) if the set of lines you have are the same length as the original, you still need the timing adapter on #1. Distance from IP is an "engineered" (for lack of a better word) length that correlates to the timing on the engine. Not running the timing adapter will probably work, but that cylinder will get the fuel a bit sooner that it should as compared to the other cylinders. Might causing timing issues and affect engine performance - not sure on that though.

I ran into the opposite problem when installing my ATS turbo. The air cleaner didn't fit because the 6.9 and 7.3 injection lines are different. The flat 6.9 line didn't fit into the ATS air cleaner groove correctly.
Closer injection line set is for 6.9, the one behind is 7.3.

How does one decide to furnish a product, have them produced, realize they don't fit, and not make the manufacturer to replicate the pattern parts?

+1 on use the timing adapter.

I did not know that, thanks for the picture.
Always learning something new about these engines.
Also not all trucks came with the Timing Adaptor.
My 86 does not have one.

Trying to tweak and bend the new Chicom hard lines to
fit correctly, would be a P ITA to get them to line up and
screw the Cap Nut on the Injector w/o cross threading it.
They are not like forming Brake Lines.

Long before I bought the 86 6.9 Diesel, I read on one of the
Mercedes Forums that all the Hard Fuel lines are the same
length. Maybe 15 years ago.

I sent a message about the timing adapter yesterday, so if I don’t hear back today I’ll call tomorrow. Since the lines are advertised for both 6.9 and 7.3 engines, and the 6.9s don’t have the adapter, I assumed they lengthened the #1 line to eliminate the need for the adapter. If all else fails I realized I can push a piece of fishing line through the lines to get a good measurement and find out if #1 is shorter than the rest.

As for the issue with the lines being too tall, I ordered a spacer for a carb air cleaner that should raise it up and clear the lines.

The air cleaner spacer fit perfectly and raised the airbox just enough to clear the lines. I was hoping that the lid bolt would still reach, but it’s too short so I’ll have to buy a longer one.
