It depends on what he used. Something along the line of Silver Seal isn't too bad, but I've been told by a guy working at a radiator shop the Bars Leaks will plug radiators. Either way, if you end up with this truck, replace the water pump right away and flush the cooling system out.

It'd be a shame if he plugged the radiator. Said he paid an arm and a leg to get a brass core instead of aluminum.

Although $9500 is more than I want/will pay I looked around at other trucks in that price range, even newer, and there were no screamin' deals. An amazing number of trucks I saw with salvage titles, P-strokes needing a new trans and injectors, most with 275k+ miles and all in the 9-11k range. Yikes!

If you don't mind traveling, you can get a really nice truck for half that price.

I feel like the fact that he had the original radiator re cored shows that it is a well taken care of truck. Not many guys (including me) go through the trouble of having that done.

Aside from the high price and StopLeak. Re-upholstered the front seat, had the Banks turbo installed by Banks in Azusa, redid the head gaskets after the turbo install due to leakage(about 100k ago), repainted the truck about 15 years ago, matching camper shell, used Stanadyne fuel additive for last 20 years, at last clutch job had the trans gone through and one bearing replaced, had the glow plugs updated to 7.3 style, replaced rear ring and pinion about 150k ago, new bearings and seals in rear axle, synthetic fluids in the running gear, replaced both sending units when bed was off for paint, replaced tank selector valve, aftermarket reverse lights in bumper, boost and pyro gauges, trailer brake controller, Optima red tops, and a total of 5 manila folders full of receipts. Of course this means nothing until I see it and drive it.

I don't mind traveling and I'm all ears. In a way I've sort of given up on finding a truck locally in my price range that has straight body, good paint, and is solid mechanically. I can figure out the mechanical issues but there's only so much time in a life and I think learning body and paint just ain't in my cards.

This is true. Look around in Utah and Nevada. Anywhere that the cost of living is lower, the used vehicle prices are generally quite a bit lower too. I don't know what it would take to get an out of state vehicle titled in California, but a little bit of headache there could end up saving you quite a bit of money.

Remember that these are all maintainance items. Sure some of them may have gone beyond what was needed, but they really don't add a lot of value to the truck.

X2

Good maintenance is an asset to a vehicle, and his records/receipts show he did that. But the money spent on maintenance is nowhere near a dollar for dollar trade to the trucks value.

I'm just a bit shocked by the asking price on some of these vehicles, at least in CA. But since the pandemic officially kicked in, the number of pre-smog diesels for sale dropped by about a third If I can manage the logistics there are some nice rigs up in Oregon. I know the prices are better out of state but committing to buying a truck sight unseen has its risks. It'd be a bummer to get there and find some major BS.

yeah, I know what you mean, especially about body work.

Maybe one of the guys on here would be willing to check a truck out for you if it's close to them, then you can have an extra set of eyes. I have done that a few times and it works out well. Otherwise like you said, you are taking a big risk buying sight unseen.

Just for comparison. CA prices are ridiculous. https://sacramento.craigslist.org/cto/d/*******-pines-1986-ford-250-diesel/7310721468.html

Yours might be a good deal at $9500

A little sampling what`s out here on the west coast.

Not true cost of living is cheaper here in Nevada, maybe a bit less than kommie land.
Diesel in Tahoe is $5.00 +-, Reno is almost like Calif.
Down here $2.89 cheapest and Chevron is $3.50.
