quick question. steering wheel

I replaced the steering shaft and now the steering wheel is at the 2:00 position on a straight road. Rather than going through all the grief at the steering box (removing and resetting the splined connection) Can I pull the steering wheel and center it that way? I can't remember of the steering wheel can go back on the spline in any position.

Well... Kinda. There is a flat locating spline designed to prevent it. You can however force the wheel down anyway. It does work, I've done it myself, at least on the bricknose trucks. No clue if it works on 92+

One issue though, your turn signals will not cancel correctly as the cam won't be oriented the right way.

That's not what I wanted to hear. It looks like I'll loosen both top and bottom set screws and hopefully get enough slack so I can turn the steering box a little and reconnect. I was careful not to disturb anything during the removal and replacement - just a little wrestling to get it back together must have been enough to make the steering wheel off center.

I pulled the steering wheel, adjusted it from 2:00 to 12:00 and reinstalled - easily. Didn't need to force it. The directional signals still cancel as they always did.
The Borgeson steering shaft installed easily and reduced the free play in the steering wheel by 50%. The remaining 50% is manageable but I might try a rebuilt steering box - LMC offers one for less than $200.

I wasn't saying it would be "difficult" but when you tightened the nut down you "forced it" on over that master spline. That's what I was saying.

The directional signals still cancel as they always did.

I think you'll find the one signal cancels slightly sooner and the other one cancels later in the rotation. Might not be bad with so little off, but if the wheel was off a lot you'd notice it. Mine was far enough off I had to hold one signal down to get it to stay on, and the other wouldn't cancel.

I wasn't saying it was a major problem, just pointing out the downfalls of doing it that way.

There is a high spot at the center of the gear so that steering is tighter when straight ahead. Adjust the tie rods so that spot is high when the wheels are straight, then install the steering wheel straight.

The triggers for the cancel mechanism are not on the steering wheel itself? They are on old chevies but I can't remember how this one works. In other words, the cancel function would not work if the wheel was off on some of the other cars I have worked on.

You are saying it's part of the shaft and not the wheel?

They're inside the column, but a pin on the wheel "drives" them (if I recall correctly). Been a little while since I was in there, just going from what mine was doing.

91- down, no clue how the 92+ trucks are

The silver nub on that black ring sits in a groove on the wheel. That ring is what actually cancels the signals.


Come to think of it, maybe I'm thinking of it backwards. Maybe my issue was the wheel being cocked so that was why they weren't working right?

I don't remember now, you managed to confuse me LOL

That was what I remembered on other cars and trucks but could not remember if these were the same or not. They must be the same?
