I'm throwing a lot of black smoke as the motor is spinning and getting up to speed. It throws extreme amounts when I'm pulling a trailer and getting on the freeway at anything above 3,000 ft altitude or so. It gets worse as I go higher and slightly better as I go lower. I have to shift the E4OD into second just so I don't smoke out anyone behind me. Timing is set around 8° to 8.5°. Max PSI is around 9.I thinking about turning down the moose Jr a flat or two and bumping up the boost a pound or so.

You likely won’t make cranking fuel if you turn down the fuel, try adjusting your wastegate first to add more air

I'd max the wastegate and give the air filter a look. I've sucked a shop rag before and blew tons of smoke as it was clogging the air filter.

Beyond that you could bump the timing to 9* and run a heavy dose of additive or bio-diesel to clean her up.

Has anything changed with the FIPL? Maybe shifting at a lower RPM not letting the engine wind up?

I don't want to max the wastegate because I am concerned with reliably. I take my truck to the boonies.

It's when the motor winds up that the smoke goes away. Lower RPMs under load creates thick black smoke.

I understand. Do you know the max psi your setup will make?

As far as shifting at lower RPM's, what I was getting at was does it feel like the E40D is shifting earlier than usual rather than letting the engine get into the boost.

I've never seen it before but maybe give the MAP/Baro sensor a look and make sure the port is clear and the harness looks good. It plays into the E40D shift strategy and could affect shifting @ altitude.

If all the usual suspects check out I think I'd perform a compression test.

Unfortunately my truck didn't exhibit mid-throttle smoking until I lost a significant amount of compression. It would clean up once she got on the pipe.

One thing that I didn't see you mention is how many RPMs your engine is turning when it smokes black. All I saw was where you said "as the motor is spinning and getting up to speed". Since you're from (assuming) the San Francisco area, I'm betting that you're pretty close to sea level. 3000' doesn't sound like much, but it's a decent change from sea level. Although mine is N/A, I see quite a bit more smoke while accelerating at 3000' higher elevation than I live at. You have less air at 3000' higher compared to what your setup is used to. You have to put out more boost to see the same amount of air going into your engine at higher elevations. There may not be a problem if you're seeing the black smoke at low RPM's that are under or in the bottom of the boost range.

Wow, I had no idea that there was such a sensor. Thanks.

You're correct, I am in the SF Bay Area. I'm not sure about the exact RPM's actually. I'll have to look into it. Unfortunately, I'm not leaving the Bay Area for a couple of weeks. I want to say that if I'm around 1800 to 2200 it will be smoking pretty hard. Especially when I'm getting on the freeway or coming out of a curve and going slightly uphill. I think it starts to clear up when I downshift and get its spinning around 2800 to 3000.

Are you from the Bay area or is being @ sea level a new thing?

I ask because I thought California's diesel was blended with BioDiesel? I could be wrong but if this occurred after a different fuel that could play into it.

I've always been here but this is a new motor combination that I'm working with. I didn't have the problem with the old stock setup.

Gotcha. I don't know if you have a signature setup but either way it doesn't show on my phone.
