If my engine flew apart tomorrow, I believe I'd be looking for a 24 valve Cummins. Those engines have always impressed me in both power and fuel economy. I wouldn't even "hot rod" it, stock power is plenty for my taste.

The DT360 is only slightly heavier than IDI and 6BT.... beyond that, yes, the size and weight increase substantially.

All the work of a 12v cummins swap, *plus* a whole mess of wiring. Then you have the typical VP44 and ECM failures that come with.

The biggest win I see with the 24v is the power you can make on a really stock engine with just a tuner... 400+hp easy. Turn it off and on as you please.

Or you end up with a "53" block lol

Thanks for all the good information everyone. Im starting to remove the motor and tranny that is in the truck. Ill post pictures in this as i move along. I forgot about classic diesel and Russ. Ive been a long time lurker on here. Never had too many reasons to post until now. It’ll be a fun project. It’s a busy time of year for me right now with my little landscaping business but I’m going to be trying to make as much time as i can for the truck. Usually i use it a lot for work. It’s kind of like missing a family member having the truck down.

To the guy who said 24v Cummins, i would stick with a 90s, preferably a 97 because i like to make my own fuel from the waste oil and stuff. Ive got a lot into my centrifuge setup and i would hate to have to get rid of it all. Plus, with how much driving i do, the bio fuel thing saves me a ton of money.

I do have quite a learning curve to overcome. As far as turbos and things like that I’m fairly new. Ive worked on my gas vehicles and equipment for years. Naturally aspirated tractors and other diesel equip. Ive only really done maintenance on turbo diesels. It’ll be a fun project. Because of my lack of knowledge on diesels ill be asking a lot of questions when it comes to the rebuilding. I would like to wake the motor up as much as i can while still having the reliability. Any info on turbos and turbo setups and things like that would be appreciated.

Would a person be able to get the turbo from R&D and also their stock drop in air intake? Not the turbo kit with the plenum and modified manifold but just the regular intake. Seems to me since they say “ stock drop in turbo” and “stock drop in intake” you would be able to use them both. But, I don’t know much of anything about this kind of stuff. Actually, I couldn’t really see me spending a bunch on an intake if i could just throw one together. I guess what i want to know is, how “worth it” is the modified plenum/ manifold vs just getting their “factory drop in replacement” and throwing some pipe on it? I know the crushed down pipe is bad.

Thanks fellas, have a good one.

Man, I'd like to see a write up on your centrifuge setup. Justin/R&D has I think an entire IDI rebuild series on Youtube. As far as his plenum stuff, it looks decent, and I liked the idea of ceramic coatings on them which he offers for heat retention. I wrapped my crossover pipes, and uppipe, and it's held up just fine.

I have the last full year of the 7.3 IDI with the serp belt & 250 amp alt 88k miles, also the last MONTH of the 12 Valve 5.9 Cummins 115k miles in a 12; duelly flatbed. You know you can mot spend a dime & double the HP & Torque just by tuning. There was a spred in diesel magazine I kept. I love my IDI but the Cummins 12 valve is what I'd choose, I had the bpck checked for being from brazil, the tranny gone thru & the rear end rebuilt when I bought it a few thousand miles ago then broke my back so I have to sell it. Never been towed with & I bought a new 4k# lift gate I never installed. When I buy a truck I take it to thhe best diesel guy I know & have it gone thru & zero timed. Brakes are llke new, it's ready to go. They have million & 2 million mile clubs for these. That's my advise fing a low mile well maintained & skip all the work.

OF course, the easiest thing would be to buy a used idit like this one: https://denver.craigslist.org/pts/d/laramie-1994-f250-73idi-turbo-engine/7055619181.html
Looks like someone in Denver is also selling a used factory turbo, with injection pump lines etc for $800 as well: https://denver.craigslist.org/pts/d/aurora-ford-f250-f350-factory-ats-turbo/7055003878.html
I don't know anything else about these 2 items or who is selling them.

I've got a 1993 International 4900 with a DT466, it is a much bigger engine than the 7.3 idi, the trans is much bigger, radiator and intercooler are big and it is no powerhouse. It has the MW injection pump, which is probably part of it's problem.
On the plus side, the dt466 always starts up, even when cold and hauls a lot of tonnage, just kind of slow and pokey.

DT360 would be interesting......but I vote Cummins swap for aftermarket support and parts availability down the road.

Of course being different and building an IDI is a nice idea.

Welp I've been vague and not helpful, my work here is done.
