I pulled the 86 of the weeds again Part 2

Some of you will remember I pulled the 86 out of the weeds in February of 2022

We went through several things and getting it back to where it would be roadworthy and I documented most of them here on oil burners the last thing was I was getting the extremely high oil pressure I was blowing my gauges ended up being a valve that is under the oil filter that was plugged it blew the seal out of my oil filter. And we were concerned it was going to blow the seals out of the engine I have come to the conclusion whether I’m wrong or not that what actually happened was that the oil was stopped at the oil filter and my gauge was before that point I thought I was getting oil all kinds of oil all kinds of pressure then what actually happened was there was no oil getting to the bearings engine lifters and such as that. So then when I got to trying to set the timing on the engine I could see my RPM was dropping and picking up and and then I could hear a squalling sound that convinced me I’d spun a bearing. Let me know what you think of my theory. Here is a link to the old 2022 thread.

https://www.oilburners.net/threads/i-pulled-the-old-86-out-of-the-weeds.90972/

now the plans are to pull the engine and check the bearings and see if I can salvage it

and here’s a question I’m trying to find out if I can swap this 1988 Navistar long block with a 1999 powerstroke I have the power stroke long block. I don’t have the injectors. And I don’t care to get into the electronics the whole engine.

Another option is a 5.9 Cummins 12v
Thanks i'm very curious as to what you guys come up with.

You can't run a Powerstroke without the electrical stuff. They're not the same as a IDI engine. Even if you did spin a bearing, why not fix the IDI?

This just came up the other day. I saw an add for a 1940s 2ton truck that had been frame swapped with a Idi truck. The guy said in the ad it has a 7.3idi none turbo. He goes on to say it’s the exact same engine as a power stroke just with no turbo. He was schooled pretty quick.

Anyway the swap could be done but like already said gonna be hell on earth if you don’t know exactly what your doing. As for the Cummins.. a little easier but costly adaptors would be needed. I’d fix the IDI. And use all the money saved in wiring and adaptors to mildly build it. Even if the block is trash I’d bet you can find a Idi local for not much. Might even be running.

They made the Idi up to 94, then they made a factory turbo option til 95 with slightly different internals.

Did they make an idiTurbo
Factory for many years. And were they a lot better in terms of power and fuel economy

The Factory Turbo was an option in '93 and early '94. As delivered from the factory, they did have a little bit more power, but not much more. They can be modified to make pretty decent power just by turning up the fuel and tying the wastegate shut. As for mileage, I have no idea.

The turbo and none turbo motors, if all other things are equal will not get better milage. nothing inherent in the 93-94 stock turbo motor will have it get better milage.

The best balance of milage and power is achieved with a turbo, a turned up ip just enough to tow or haul what you need, proper timing, slowing down and keeping your right foot out of it, tires at the right psi and proper maintenance My 1990 with a banks and a E4od gets well into the 20s empty and 14-16 towing a 10k horse trailer. But I drive 55 MAX I’m usually 5mpg under, and I drive like I have an egg under my foot. The driver has the most effect on mpgs no matter what type of car or truck your driving. I know people that can’t get 20mpg from a 4cyl honda.
