Has anyone tried to swap gears around in a zf?I'd like the diesel first gear while using the rest of the gears from a gasser.I know it sounds goofy, but it would really tighten up the ratios, getting rid of as much of a jump from 1-2.

All you need is a ZF s47 from a diesel to get the better low 1st gear. The S42 SUCKS.

And with the s-47 you will also have a lower reverse too!

What about your axle gears? I have never driven a 3.55/zf truck before but I like the way my truck drives. Just saying that might be a lot easier then messing with your transmission.

What I want is the 4.14 from the diesel and the 2.97 2nd frfom the gasser vs the 2.4? or whatever the diesel has.I dont need the lower 1st for this truck. Its not gonna tow anything more than my quad trailer, but is going to have 40" tires so i'd like to use first sometimes and not have the bigass gear jump I have now with the gasser trans. And I never did like the 1st-2nd spread in the diesel trans either.

S42 gasser 5.72 2.94 1.61 1.00 0.76 5.24
S47 diesel 5.08 2.60 1.53 1.00 0.77 4.66

yeah it does. I think the easiest route would to get an s5-47 from a diesel truck. there you get a "middle" ratio and its still plug and play.

And with 40 inch tires you might want 4.10s anyway

I guess I should have updated my sig since all of the drivetrain swapping.I've got 4.10 now and I guess I need to drive something with the s47 then.

the gears on the counter shaft not removable ....zf 5 speed wide ratio for gasser and diesel .....close ratio for diesel only( factory} the biggest difference is first gear diesel close ratio has 4.14 first gear ..wide ratio is 5.72 first and 2 nd gear wide ratio 2.94 close ratio is 2.37 ....5 th almost same 3 rd almos same 4 th gear 1-1 ofcourse FYI these transmissions have to be assembled with a pre load on the tapered shaft bearings if not presise exact ,it will have excessive bearing noise good luck
