I don't know much about these transmissions or diesel in general but anyways I can get a zf 5 speed and tcase for cheap its out of a 1990 250 with a 460 will this work behind my 84 6.9 or does anyone have info on this swap or a link to info on a 5 speed swap. I really want a 5 speed I hate the 4 spd

Should pretty much be a bolt in deal. I think you can even use the same cross member

1 dieselman is right. Different bellhousing between the gas and diesel, and unlike your T19 the bellhousing on the ZF5 is not removeable. The big block gas pattern is very similar so it may be that if you were an excellent fabricator you could modify it and get it to bolt behind the diesel.

The upgrade to a ZF5 over a t-19 is one of the best things you can do IMO. You will need a different clutch disc, but would be better to get the complete clutch setup including flywheel. Other than that it's a basic bolt in job you can even use your transfer case and drive shafts

This is good info what about the slave or master whatever one is on the side of the trans. I find right now my jump from 3rd to 4th is really big what's it like in the zf

Your hydraulic clutch system will work great. In one word nice, and overdrive is a huge plus.

Your gear spreads are fairly identical between the T19 and the ZF5, all I've ever found is as follows;
T19
1st 4.02, 2nd 2.41, 3rd 1.41 4th 1.0

ZF5
4.14, 2.37, 1.42, 1.0, .76

With that you won't see much difference in your 3rd to 4th. I did mine not long ago and couldn't tell a noticible difference in the splits. That's with 4.10's and 38's.

Might do the ZF swap then different gearing to get your gears closer together.

you can use 460 trans behind a idi. A little grinding and one bolt hole will be left blank. Not a direct bolt in but if the price is right:dunno
