Workin' on my stacks project with a few pics!

Since everyone loves pictures, I thought I might post up some pics of my slowly-moving stacks project (actually, I'm hoping to have it done this weekend-ish, weather permitting).

First off, I didn't feel like paying $100 for a splitter pipe, so I decided to make my own. Found a guy on ebay selling boxes of 20 assorted 4" mandrel bends for $100 with free shipping. I bought it, figuring I could certainly get 5 90's out of it, and then be able to sell the rest and probably at least break even.

So, I cut two of the 90's, and welded them together for my splitter pipe.

And I actually DID put a splitter in there, just to make sure I get good flow out of both stacks.

So, if you break it down by the individual mandrel bend, I have about $10 in my splitter pipe

Then, I did some measuring and checking and put together the rest of the pipe (it's just tack welded together in this picture)-

I used two of the other 90's, and some scrap pipe I had left over from doing my exhaust the first time. So, now my investment is up to $20, plus whatever worth you could assign to that scrap pipe.

I think it's coming along pretty nicely so far...I'm still welding up the splitter pipe as a whole, I'll take a couple more pics tonight.

Now that's like what I like to see - a homemade set up. I must say that your splitter pipe looks really good. From the looks of it the exhaust flow should be even but the timing of the smoke (if that's something your concerned about) will be off because of the distance of the two pipes. In that if you burp the throttle to give off a puff of smoke the one side will puff before the other.

But again your set up looks great!

I have used a simple T instead of a Y pipe and never had any problems with flow or lag due to extra length in one side. If a simple T works then your setup will definitely work. There will not be able to noticeable lag from the longer pipe side. Looks good!

Yeah I know the longer side may cause a little delay, I just don't want it to be like some of those guy's setups where 75% of the smoke comes out of the passenger side stack, and the other 35% comes out of the driver's side (even though my truck doesn't smoke very much)

I wasn't big on stacks either until a couple months ago...I dunno why, all of a sudden I wanted them.

Hm, I never even considered a T pipe..but I think it was probably easier to build the Y-pipe. If I did a T-pipe I'd be afraid of it not ending up straight.

Ive seen them made out of a box with three round holes cut into the box. This is a much easier way to make it and it is a LOT cheaper/easier to make a box. I should have made that more clear.......you are right any pipe fitting as big as most use is expensive.
My stacks on my flatbed are mounted to a 6"x4" aluminum extruded box with the ends capped off. There are two 5" dia aluminum stubs on each end of the box to accept the stacks. There is one 3" aluminum stub on the bottom side of the box that the exhaust pipe hooks up to. I could get some pics if there is anybody interested.

i paid almost $300 for my y-pipe it is 5 inchs and split in the center, i get even smoke out of both stacks, i think if i would have paid full price for all my 5 inch pipe for the bed pipe it would have been almost $700 but it only cost 400 but it was definatly worth every penny
