I think that guy ended up worth a valve problem after that, IIRC.

3K isn't going to bother the IDI, but EGT's are a different story.

One of the rocker arm bolts backed out when he revved it up that high. Tightened it back down & it was fine after that.
Rev mine up to 3800 with no worries once so ever. Also running comp 910's tho.

Well if a rocker bolt "backed out"...... My suspicions are he over revved it and stretched a bolt. They just don't randomly back out once tight.. Unless the stretch...

I had rocker bolts on my 300 back out. Was just many, many miles of vibration. Was enough to not move the valve and pulled this big 5'er home on only 5 cylinders. I rebuilt the top end and used rocker studs and double nuts though :D

I don't think my IDI will really rev that high on the road. I'm not looking at the tach right now, but I've basically got nothing power-wise after the needle gets into the yellow on the stock tach, but could keep pushing it if I wanted to :dunno

One thing to remember fellas, @towcat F-Superduty Wreckers have 5.13... rear gears..... he has said many times on here, those trucks spend all day on the governor for years, running 14,000lbs.......

I'd say, get a pyro, and a temp gauge.... run it up and let'r go....... keep the temps in check, and do proper maintenance you should be good....

affirmed. 3800rpm pinned on the governor pulling tare of 10k and a loaded gross of 17-21k. truck will do it all day long. i don't like pinning the throttle without a load.

he posted a thread on the red-headed step sister site,
altho he did tighten down the rocker nut, and it ran ok, he eventually did have valve issues.
IIRC he ended up doing a head swap.
id look up the thread, but after 2 shy of a dozen, im tired.
grab your magnifying glass Sherlock! :D

IIRC They tested IDI's pre release by running them at max load at governered RPM, for a looooong time. Do not be afraid to rev them out. In fact, if mine falls below 2000rpm's pulling a grade with a load, my EGT's go into the unsafe zone. Of course I'm turbo'ed, and the pump is maxed. Some 7.3's came with 3800rpm govenors, they are fine up there.

Something is wrong with your buddies ecoboost. It will do everything your IDI does, without having to go anywhere near WOT. Maybe he has the 2.7 and some highway gears? Transit 350 grossing 16-17K makes my truck at 14-15K gross feel slow, and that is the detuned version with 3.31 gears.

^ I was thinking the same.
A stock ecoboost can out tow most idi's. Lol technology.
It's kinda weird at redline how the engine goes quite. (On my psd)

Who was it that had the idi he was running at 4500 regularly? I remember his avatar was that off-road truck, can't remember the name or handle for the life of me......
He ended up with some valve float and closed 'em with the piston eventually IIRC, I remember he had a video towards the end asking what the valve float noise was.......

so did his IDI, and it STAYED quiet....... permanently LOL

back to the topic at hand..........

Truck in question is Ernest in sig, just wondering what rpms when towing up hills you guys will push your engine to safely when climbing steep hills. There's an awful hill near my place that's rather long and some friends and I have been taking our buddies boat out on weekends and I've been towing it there as his new Eco boost f150 sounds like a dying animal trying to tow it.

I've been revving right up to 3k in fourth gear up this hill, I can still go up in fifth but I figured the lugging is worse. Truck does great for a n/a, not sure of the exact weight of the boat right now but I had looked it up before we towed it the first time and it was within safe limits for the old beast.

I don't figure 3k is gonna hurt it for like a two minute climb, first time I've ever seen the old guy blow some real smoke revved up that high with a load. Kinda fun not that it matters haha. Speed limit is 55 and there's no passing lane so I like not to be that guy in this area and keep it moving..

unloaded, I keep my truck under 3000 ripems, loaded, I'll bounce it off the tach uphill if needed, I'm not afraid to downshift, although since my truck tilts the scales at 8600lbs empty at this point, I could probably consider it the same as a SCLB with a light load in the bed LOL

Yeah I'm pretty sure it's highway gears but I have no idea about the motor. He abuses that truck a lot, not good with keeping up on general maintenance and just assumes since its newer he doesn't have to look at anything and it will be fine. Half the reason I now tow the boat is we were scared towing something was for sure gonna blow it up and didn't want to be stranded. It doesn't idle smooth and was low on oil when I not him last checked it when we took his truck.

I'm past the point of trying to help him though you know? Like I can tell you five times to change your oil check your air filter put some injector cleaner in it drive it for a tank and if it's the same take it to my other friend who can pull the codes for him and see if something is up and "nah it's fine" .. Ok then blow it up, not my truck.

Thanks for all the replies btw, I will for sure be winding it up this Memorial Day weekend when the old 46 case moves to my grandmas house to mow the field behind her house. Hopefully it won't mind being wound up. Anyone know what oil a 46 case tractor should have? Lol I assume 30 weight, Google time..

I run either 15-40 or straight 30 in any old tractor. They ain't very picky.

As for the Rpms, I've seen my tach hit 4000 before pulling heavy up hills. My old engine I played with the gov spring too much, I could hit 4400 on my tach with that one. 230k on the 6.9 pulling an empty trailer (about 4K) up Penn View mt I spun all the mains.

I was running out of power in 1st gear so I pulled over to pull in down into low range. That's when it stopped running. Let it cool off, started again, made it about half a mile and it was done forever. Worst part is the oil pressure never dropped below 45psi till it shut off
