Will it fit??

Hey all,
There is a guy that lives down the road from me that has a 1996 F-350 powerstroke dually that has a 5 speed in it. Will that tranny and stuff make the jump to my 1990 F-250 IDI w/ a E40D?? If not why.

Janos I posted a thread very simular to your question. Got a friend with a 4700 IH sporting a T444E, aka PSD, that he wanted to take out and put an IDI in its place. Problem is the "bell housing" pattern is different. Look in the general info area under medium duty trucks for a thread titled T444E out 7.3 IDI in. Anyway there are pics in that thread of the "bell housing" bolt pattern on a PSD and they are no where near the same.

It will fit you will have to get a clutch pedel from a 87-91 ford and different flywheel. the idi and psd differ.

um I dont think so, The earlier ZF's (S5-42) went up to '95 and the later ZF's (S5-47) were from '96 on. These are two different trannies because the bolt pattern is different. I may be mistaken so you might want to confirm this with someone else.

The question is why would you want to go from a simple IDI to a complicated PSD?

A Ford app PSD 5 speed will bolt right up to an IDI. A buddy of mine is running a ZF out of a 94 factory turbo idi truck behind his 96 PSD.

I'm pretty sure the reason that your friend can't make a similar swap is that all the IH motors whether PSD or IDI have a standard SAE#3 bellhousing whereas the Ford IDIs and PSD all use an adapter plate to adapt the IH diesels to the Ford diesel bell. So I'm pretty sure any Ford diesel tranny will bolt behind any Ford diesel engine at least until after 97 some things changed a little more after that.

Did your friend get his IDI out of a Ford truck? IIRC there's an adaptor plate on the Ford IDI (and PSD) to switch from an SAE bolt pattern (used on IH trucks) to the pattern that Ford wanted to use. I tend to think that, if he removes this adapter plate, he'll find that the IDI's bolt pattern is the same as the pattern on the T444e he pulled out of his rig.

As to trannies, there are a few people using S5-47 PSD trannies in their IDI's. IIRC the only major difference (other than internal improvements and possibly different gear ratios?) is that the clutch slave cylinder's mounted inside the bellhousing. Are both trucks either 4x4 or 4x2?

No adapter plate on the IDI. It came out of an old u-haul IH truck.

Is there a starter attached to that IH engine right now? Cause the starter bolts up to the adapter plate in the Ford applications, I'd imagine without said plate the starter would have to bolt up to the Clarke 5-speed trans?

So pretty much it's a gamble to get a perfect match. I was wondering are these adapter plates available or would I have to conjure one up from scratch.

Can't you get one from a junkyard? I'd imagine they'd be also available through the dealerships, as there have been a few cases where the plate cracked at the starter.

I don't know. This is new territory for me, this being my first IDI. I have made adapter plates for lots of stuff but with this being my way to work I don't want any surprises. I'd rather have a weekend swap. Keeping the custom fabbing to a minimum is great.

Then start scouring junkyard, find an IDI that has the trans removed already and get the adapter plate. Just beware, the plate is cast-iron, very thick, and therefore seriously heavy. But why do you even need the plate? Your 1990 F250 already has it bolted to it, that's how the E4OD is attached to the SAE bell bolt pattern block.
