The stock 7.3 idi GPC, when working correctly, actually works quite well. A push button system for glowplugs is a great way to burn them up. One second too long and puff, they go out like a blown out candle.
The GPC cycles the glows which prevents them from overheating.

Adding more devices and electrical components makes the system less bulletproof. The most reliable system is going to be the simplest, a momentary switch or, even better, a time delay switch. If you can find one that switches off after 5 seconds, that would let you cycle twice in cold weather or once in hot weather without risking your plugs
