Sounds to me like the timing is retarded by a few degrees which will cause the smoke Suggest that you consider moving the injection pump about the thickness of a dime a small move makes a difference. then and see if that helps. not sure how you set the timing but without the correct meter doing what I have suggested helped me when mine was doing similar things. if it starts "rattling" you have gone to far advanced not a good thing if driven like that. Just my .02 but worked for me good luck.
