Hi I have 2 89 idi s one is a c-6 and the other a 5 speed overdrive. This is concerning the 5 speed. The truck has 150K miles and 2 injectors are leaking. They appear to be stock except for one that at some time has been replaced. I am planning to replace all of them. The truck has an ats turbo and I am setting it up as my work truck and gas mileage is my chief concern. My question is which injectors do i want. I have looked online and have seen prices from about $24 to Napa at $55 some are new, some are rebuilt, everybody says theres are the best. HELP. What do I go with?? Also I keep hearing codes like BB and G and have no idea what they mean and what I might have right now. For this truck I dont want performance unless it will help with mileage. My other truck is the performance truck so far I have a banks kit on it with a 4" straight through exhaust and the IP turned up one flat I am at 7000 ft EL and it still doesnt smoke much even when I get on it and hard climbing my highest egt has been around 950, so I am about to turn it up again and see where we are at. Thanks in advance for your help. Van

There are a couple people on here that sell injectors. Type4 and agnem are their user names. Big thing in my mind is to make sure they are all poptested when you get them. Agnem sells a more performance oriented injector. I believe bb is the code you want but can't tell you the difference.

BB is an OEM type injector, but it is the best OEM and considered a 'performance' injector, I love mine.

I just bought and installed some remanufactured Mylex diesel injectors from ebay on my rig. I called to verify injectors were pop tested before packaging and he was very thorough when talking to me on phone. They are BB code injectors and my engine runs very very good with these babies in them. Lots more power and throttle response. Many other idi owners have gone with these injectors and have no complaints that I know of. Timing will need to be advanced after you install new or reman injectors.....like I found out!
If you have a little extra money, type 4 or agnem will hook you up with the best injectors money can buy. I very badly wanted to install some of tpye4 or agnem injectors but money is aweful tight for me right now, so I had to go with remans.

In addition, type4 and/or agnem's injectors are very reasonably priced and precise from what I have heard ;Sweet. I just need to start saving money for next school semester

Welcome to OB, the greatest place for IDI info.

Maybe take a moment and fill some details in on your rigs in your sig...go to user cp and edit sig...it's helpfull for other members when you ask questions to know a bit about what you have and so forth.

The injector code is stamped on the wrench flats of the injector bodies...look at all the flats to see...you'll find it!

G codes came in the 94 Turbo and are a considered a emission injector ...in other words built for lower exhaust emissions not performance or mileage!

BB codes are considered by most to be the best over all injector bar none...other than a performance modified injector like Mel (Agnem) sells.

Just because a vendor tells you that an injector is pop tested does not mean it is, it could be just jibberish to make the sale...purchasing on this site from known reputable people Mel or Russ gets you a quality product at a reasonable price...

Remember..

The bitterness of poor quality outlasts the sweetness of a cheap price!

Good luck with your purchase, keep on reading and asking questions...others here will chime in too

Oh ya post some pics of yer rides too btw...

The different code are slightly different configurations developed for different engine setups over the life of the IDIs. I *think* 'A' was used only in the 83 trucks with the original head design, then 'B' is most of the 6.9s. 'AA' & 'BB' are the high altitude engines. 'C' through 'F' are various 7.3 injectors changing for different emission requirements, and then 'G' is the turbo.

Really they all are interchangable with the possible exception of the 'G' injectors, but even then they seem to run just fine. 'BB' seems to be the common aftermarket injector. It's what I just got from MWFI for mine. FYI, they're something like $28 ea? Was about $260 for 8 injectors, install kit & shipping.

So are any of the code injectors better for fuel milage? Or are the BB injectors just the best all around? What about new vs reman one better than the other. Any brands known to have issues or need to be avoided. With as cheap as these things are (came from a 2006 6.0 PS, so huge difference) I dont mined supporting some one on the sight if they have a better product for what I need.

Also no one anywhere near me seems to have a clue about timing these engines. I have even had one diesel "specialist" in the area tell me they cant be timed, it is all "automatic". Anyone know anybody in Northern AZ who has the equipment and know how to time an idi?

If I try to do it by ear, should I just assume that Basically stock units that have 150k are retarded and start moving the pump to advance a little at a time until i get the best power? Thanks

There is no such thing as automatic timing. Thats a diesel shop to stay away from. I rent a kent moore J33300-a meter to members of this forum. I do this because of the problems you have found out first hand. Pm me with questions please.

As far as I know, the only one making new injectors is Delphi. At least that seems to be the manufacturer we're all getting them from at the moment. The quality control doesn't seem to be the best on them, that's why it's HUGELY important to get them pop tested and matched before you install them. Hence everyone has recommended Agnem and Type4, as they both do this, and stand behind their stuff really well.

Remans, well the parts to rebuild an injector cost more than a new injector. So there is some hemming and hawing over how they could be cheaper. Especially since there are quite a few shady diesel shops that will simply clean and repackage worn injectors as "remanufactured." That said, quite a few people have gone with the remains from accurate diesel (ebay) and seem to be doing ok with them. I had planned on giving them a try myself. (mostly because I'm poor) If you have the spare cash, my recommendation is to talk to Russ (type4) and get a new set of BB code injectors.

On a side note, if your truck 150k on it, and your injection pump is original. It may give out on you soon too. They only last 125-150k usually. Personally I'd run it till it exploded, but do keep in mind it may give up on you soon.

If your timing it by ear, take care that you don't go too far. You can use the cold advance to help you there. Use a dogclip lead and give it constant power. When close to right, it will have a pronounced rattle "like a powerstroke" while the cold advance is energized. That rattle should go away once you unplug it. That should help you zero in, but it's still a very inaccurate method. (also, listen to icanfixall he is the timing guru)

Also, even if you already knew: Clockwise is retard, CCW is advance. NEVER START THE TRUCK UNLESS THE IP IS TIGHTENED DOWN ALL THE WAY!
