which cummins turbo

For you number crunchers which cummins turbo would work best for one of these idi's, the H1c, Hx 30, Hx35, hx40, or some other that i havent seen. also what turbo flange does a 93 intercooled cummins use because I measured the flange off of one of those engines and the measurments are the same as my turbo engineering setup. :thumbsup:So I guess the real question is which turbo uses that flange and would be best to put on an idi? I'm open to other suggestions besides the cummins turbos. I dont mind being a little bit of a guniea pig as long as your not trying to cook my engine.;Sweet

This is something I've been looking into although I haven't found anything really conclusive.

From what I've been able to find, either an HX40 (8 blade)/WH1E or HX35/HY35 should be good. The question though is which one would be better.

Holset has no official compressor maps, the only ones available are ones people have made, and I don't know how accurate they actually are. According to the ones I've seen, the 8 blade HX40 and WH1E should be great for 2000-3000 RPM, but that's just guessing.

I picked up a WH1E for cheap ($125), it came with a 19 cm2 turbine housing which I have been told is close to a 1.00 A/R. I'm trying to find a smaller housing or HX35W housing that I could have machined to fit the bigger turbine wheel (dunno if that'll happen yet, I watched an HX35 turbine housing go for $189 a couple days ago).

i dont think any of the hybrid turbos would be a good match for you. a stock 2nd gen is capable of 40psi. and the hybrids(assuming they give better performance than stock) would probably run like 60 psi. i think a stock 1st gen would probably be a good one cuz i think they only run like 20-25 psi. and from what i've learned on here and have been told the flange is a T3 which is the same as a factory turbo idi. i dont know if yours will fit but it would probably be easier for you to check.

The H1C was made in hundreds of combinations. Specific wheel diameters and housing sizes are important.

I have an HX35 on my 3.9 with mild fueling and a 2.5" single exhaust. I can peg a 60 pound gauge instantly with the wastegate unhooked. With a 16CM/48mm non-wastegated H1c I was seeing 36PSI under heavy loading with slower spool time.

I would recommend trying either an HX35 or an H1C since turbine housings and compressor wheels are so easy to change and dirt cheap. The H1C has the most possible combinations, but has a weaker shaft for very high boost applications. Surge will destroy an H1c in short time.

Well im not looking for crazy boost i just want 12, maybe 15 tops, but i really want something that will move some low end boost. i dont like the idea of rackin the engine out completely to get boost.

An HX40 is way overkill...they came on 8.3l Cummins (like the 5.9's, except 8.3l), and run around 25psi in stock configurations, way to big for our engines IMHO.

Normally the oil drains back through the turbo pedestal which plugs in where the CDR is on a stock engine. I guess with a holset turbo you'll be fabricating your own pedestal or remote mounting the thing.

well i got a wierd setup that i can bolt the holset straight on to. but you are basically saying the oil can be drained back through the valley pan grommet that has the cdr connected to it? just a crazy idea can it be drained into the cover plate that is right below the oil filler neck?

you may have to return yours back into the oil pan or some other place, cause were yours sits, on my psd turbo it set were most other turbos set and mine will drain oil back threw the cdr hole to just like the others.

The RPM at which the turbo comes into play is directly related to the size of the exhaust housing, which are easily switchable on the Cummins/Holset turbos.

Stock 1st Gen. Cummins are 18cc, later I/C 1st Gen. are 21cc, common replacements are 12cc, 14cc, and 16cc.

The smaller the exhaust housing, the lower RPM the turbo will spool up.

A trade off is, the smaller the exhaust housing, the higher the relative EGTs, especially when under load.


One missing link in the non-turbo engines, once a turbo is installed, is the lack of an AFC housing on the injection-pump.

The injection-pump on the Cummins engine has an AFC housing that is connected to the intake manifold via a boost line.

The AFC senses the increase in boost pressure and increases fueling accordingly.

Without the AFC, most of the dramatic quick gains of a turbo are lost.
