So yesterday I started tearing my front end apart to replace the wheel bearings. I got all the inner hub and special nut out but now I'm pretty sure I have to take the hub off the knuckle? Well all the bolts that are holding them together are rounded off really bad. Hopefully I don't have to take the kingpins off to get at it better. I already tried special sockets but they are too big to get in there. Any advice?

need more info on what your taking off. the hub assembly in held on by the Axel nuts, assuming its a dana 60 or 50. once you get those three parts off there is a snap ring inside to get off, and the hub with the rotor should almost fall off. if rusted might need a help aka hammer

It's a dana 60. So what your saying is I don't need to take off these 4 bolts on the knuckle? The snap ring and axle nuts are out but I still can't get it off. Maybe ill try tapping it with the good old ford tool. (3 lb sludge hammer). Funny, I feel like I use the hammer more than a wrench to work on my truck.

ya something is not right. once you get those axle nuts washer and nut off you should be able to see the outer bearing inside the hub and the hub should want to fall out.idk what for bolts your taking about anyways. there are five that hold the spindle in the nuckle, but you can get to those till after you get the hub off

Any photos of what you are fighting (bolts)? A picture will really help sort out what you are dealing with.

Ok Not sure what yer talking about but here is a thread on my calamity of horrors...perhaps the images in it will allow you to better see what goes on and such?

http://www.oilburners.net/forums/showthread.php?58999-F-350-4x-hub-stuck-on-OMG&highlight=

If you remove the LOCKING hub that you turn to get the axle locked, there is then a splined shaft exposed and the end of the stub axle that holds the weight of the vehicle.

The bearings are retained by two special nuts and there is a washer in between those nuts. Undo the outer nut, fiddle fart around to get the washer out, then remove the inner nut, you should now SEE the outer wheel bearing. and the entire hub should just slid off really easy.

Hope this helps

Al

EDIT

Hope these help

it douns like he is trying to get the spindel bolts out from the back side of the knuckle. do not do this! they are round for a reason, to fit the axle shaft through the knuckle without ruining the seal on the shaft. sounds like he is doing it backwards

Ok well turns out I was talking about the spinal bolts that I don't need to take out. I was just confused because on my superduty you need to take those bolts out. And have everything off to the point the hub should come out and it won't. Is it possible that the bearings could have fused it on? The kid I bought the truck from was driving with bad bearings for about 6 months that he knows of.

OK What year of truck are you working on?

If newer than 97 my drawings and info has no bearing (no pun intended) on the subject.

You have a Cartridge bearing setup if your newer than 97 and it's just a whole cartridge you replace as one unit. There is no repack the bearings it's just a big chunk of a UNIT bearing assembly like on the front of a front wheel drive car.

Simple.

Get some pics for us.

It's an 86. The reason I was confused is because I have only ever done them on my 2001 and for some reason my 86 f350 manual doesn't have the d60 in it. And I will post pics as soon as I finish this pita haha

Oh Ok, that makes it simpler to explain. The diagrams I have provided will suffice more or less...

The fact is the D50/44 is essentially the same from the knuckle out which is where the wheel bearings are. You can see in my personal pics the funny round nut with notches, there are two of those as I mentioned and a washer between them. Get all that out of the way and the hub/rotor will fly off....baring no unforseen damage internally to prevent it.

Hope that helps.
