What Mods Can Be Done To A C-6?

I'm probably in need of some tranny work & would like to bulletproof the thing in the process. Whats the best way to do that. I've searched the forums with no luck.

I've heard about better TC's but I thought I saw in a thread someone mention using E4OD gears in a C-6. Can that be done? What are some other suggested mods while it's open? Thanks

Scott, I would think just building it with the best componets you can find and maybe looking into a BD TC would be money well spent. I just changed my tranny fluid this morning (had a tranny pan leak) and the fluid was perfectly red, no discoloration, and this was after 25K miles of me beating up on it, towing the Jeep all over and really just using the truck. The C6 should be fine with a good rebuild. Wouldn't waste too much loot on snake oil stuff, it is a tough tranny, so just freshen it up and you should not have any troubles for a long time. I guess the KISS mentality should be applied here. I would like to get a little more punch off the line & some tighter shifts though. I thought that E4OD thing was supposed to take care of that. Thats a pretty good site JPR. Now I need to find someone around here to do what they do for a decent price.

Put a B&M Shift kit (towing) in it with good hardware, and your truck will shift hard and last. Check out TCI's website. I think they have units for sale that are HD and are around 700-1000 bucks. They are supposedly built for towing and diesels. Might save some money buying a complete HD unit, rahter than piecemealing it together. Scotty

Two suggestions......E4OD 1st gear assy, 3.75-1ratio(roughly) and a Trans-n-Go shift kit. A furnace brazed TC is not a bad idea but you don't need any special brand. Just make sure they specify "furnace brazed" fins AND torrington heedle bearings for the stator. I get mime built special here in SJ. they are pricey but not as much as some of the bigger names. I am allergic to spending 2k for a TC. The clutch drums are the highest cap for a C-6 and my trans shop buddy routinely canibalizes every diesel C-6 I drop off as a parts trans. They are bulletproof and not much needs to be done to make them better.

My dad had two C6s. One was in a '75 F-250 with a 460 and the other was in a '77 F-250 4X4 starting out with a 351M and then a built 429. Both of these trucks pulled 24' travel trailers through the San Bernardino Mts and the 4X4 hauled a cord and a half of tamarack and redfir firewood. Neither tranny had more than a fluid change or maybe a front seal when a motor was out. A good torque converter should be all you need except maybe the shift kit. Tough, tough transmissions. I still prefer a manual though.

Yup, told ya... HA, but the guys are right, I had a few C6's in trucks I built while younger, I had one C6 behind a 400HP 460 with 39's and as a young boy, I would burn those tires up. I would 4 wheel the crap outta it and just plain abuse it and the tranny never even sniffled. Just put a good cooler on there and run it. I am surprised yours is whooped, unless it hard a previous hard life of towing or plowing or something. Dunno, there are always weak ones in the bunch, that go against the grain. I say all this and mine will probably take a poo soon. Scotty

Well, I'm not sure if this is a third or fourth replacement tranny. The truck didn't run a whloe lot at the fire dept., but when it did go out it was run VERY hard. I wanna say this is the third tranny that's in it now. I know of two that were in it before & unless someone blew it up after I became less active, it should be the third. Problem is the FD only spends enough to get by, so it could be crap through & though. I can't say I'm surprised knowing how the treasurer of the FD spends the $$$$. It will be done right this time around.

I have an 87 with a good tranny, I will sell you for a bargain, quit worryin about all those problems with the 88's. I heard they were nothin but problems, but those 87's were badd A*&.... I happen to have one. And look, you have a car transporter.. Heck, I am only a hop skip and a jump away... Scotty

This thread has been dead for a while, but I figured better to just bring it back to the top of the list that start over. I've been trying to price around locally for a solid rebuild & the prices these people want are crazy. $1100.00 was the cheapest for a straight rebuild - no bulletproofing included.

I'Ve seen complete transmissions built to handle substantial power in jegs & summit & some on the web. Are these suitable for truck & 4x4 applications? Anybody done that instead of a rebuild? If so, can you link me a site? I'm seeing prices for a built trans. from 850 -1100 dollars

Check out TC transmissions, I saw them advertised awhile back for a diesel C6 that was bullet proof for around a 1000 or so.. I will investigate further for you. Scotty
