This might be shorted out, causing my alternator to run voltage full time.

If you can make out the part number, I often go to fordparts.com and enter the Ford part number and it will give you a description. Works most of the time, but if the number has been superceded, sometimes it doesn't work.

:dunno

 After-glow relay, 83; mounted in front of RH battery on fender

Google is your friend. Appearantly so is "dieselmann" I don't know him, but he has an IDI diesel store, and listed the part on his site. Maybe buy it from him since he helped you figure out what it is?:dunno

Makes sense, although I still don't think my 83' has one, which it must. :dunno Anyway, I've been helping Shawn out over the phone and he posted this pic at my request. He's got a problem where as his voltage regulator is full fielding the alternator even when the truck is off, and we're trying to chase down the cause. Shawn, you'll need the glow plug schematic I have here.

This is the exact same problem Lockedhearts was having, you may want to PM her to see what the shop she used did to fix it.

Trust me,
If it were the alt or the reg. it would be fixed many times over.
I've changed the alt atleast 4 times and literally done in 37 regulators.
Something is causing it to do this.

Just in case you aren't familiar with this. The after glow relay was separate in the early models. It was to help with cold start up and to reduce white cold start smoke. On the later models, it was incorporated into the glow plug controller at the back of the drivers' head, and then later with the 7.3printed circuit controller, is also built into the unit.

Normal starting is glow plugs lit for 10 secs or so, then start the truck, and the after glow relay will trigger on/off cycling of the glow plugs for about 90 seconds to help warm up.

The connection to the alternator was so that the relay/controller saw voltage to tell it that the truck had started and needed the cycling...
