1985 F-350 Diesel original factory alternator.

Screw-mounted, on top of the alternator, is a fat black plastic cylinder that the two wires of the alternator pass through, as in the wires are molded into this black gizmo, one medium-fat wire and one skinny wire.

What purpose does this gizmo serve??, fusible-link ??, strain-relief ??

Also, what purpose does each of the wires serve ??

I assume the fattest wire is the battery-positive feed, right ??

I am in the process of improving and cleaning up the factory wiring mess and providing a BIG FAT charge-wire, getting ready for the day that I install a more powerful alternator.;Sweet

Thanks.

well if its what I think you're talking about, the early trucks ford did allot of splicing wires with. and you'll notice there's something like 3 wires going in and 2 coming out or something like that. Its to insure insulation of the splice joint. IIRC

Thanks for the picture.

Yes, it is the fat black thing under the plug you are holding.

I may be wrong, but I believe that both wires go in and out of it; I will have to look again to be certain.

Thanks.
