If you wanted to swap the 3:55's for 4:10's in the rear it is pretty easy just to change out the center carrier unit, instead of having to change out the whole rear end. Been there done that.

What about using a gasser ZF5? Will that help or hurt with 3.54's?

JMHO but 35s and 4:10s go and in hand for towing. It is a little geared out on the highway when empty but cant be beat for towing.

My current97(PSD)and my old 97(PSD also) has/had 35s/4:10s/zf5. It is a pleasure to tow with

Now my 86(IDI-N/A) has 35s/3:55s/ t-19 and it SUCKS to tow with. I am down into 3rd on the highway:eek:

Haha - I've got the same truck on 265's and it's slow when I pull my 4x4 stuff. I think it takes around 90 seconds to hit 60mph... LOL

Will a 5 speed and a turbo make this truck much more enjoyable to tow with? I've been driving in autopilot mode and tried jambing my truck into 5th a few times, lol.

A turbo will do wonders, but the 5th gear will almost be useless unless you are empty

I just finished swapping the 3.55's from my old 91 IDI to my new 95 powerstroke which had 4.10s (that axle will go back into the 91). I just can't handle the high rpm on the highway with the 4.10s - drives me nuts.

I figure if my 91 IDI, ZF5, stock tires could pull my camper and crawler (hit the scales at 15,800 lbs) with the 3.55s, then my 95 powerstroke, ZF5, stock tires could do the same, even a bit better.

The 91 was never any speed demon but it always got me there in comfort and safety. The job has now fallen to the 95 and I want to get as good of mileage as possible while I'm doing it.

Yeah, Stock tires and 3:55s are a good combo

Good to know - I bought slightly larger tires to try and get my cruising RPM's down a little more, I also hate driving this truck at 75MPH with the motor sounding like it's screaming along...

With the 3.55s and the t19 with 37s in my 250 it did well on the highway, towing a trailer on the hills id have to grab 3rd. Around town it was good too, id always pull out in second gear.

With the 4.10s and the t19 and 37s in my terra its good on the highway, around town, and everywhere in between! Id go with the 4.10s especially if you have OD.
