no im not going to kill the 83 4000 rpm is easily achived when you start passing 4400 thats when its not so good but i would rather not blow the motor cause i would like to be able to rebuild it

I had a '94 IDI Turbo that had an issue like this... Took it hooked up my brothers Featherlite 4 Horse trailer and ran it as hard down the interstate after 30 miles of hard driving it wasn't smoking when we stopped for fuel.. Problem was gone.. Rapid Diesel said it was prolly a stuck/sticking injector

Sounds like a leaky injector, my 84 6.9 was having similar problems, after a run down the highway @ 100 km/h for 30km I pulled over and felt my injector lines by hand, replaced the injector with the hot line with another I had and the problem cleared up. tried a heavy dose of diesel kleen prior to this and it didn't help the problem.
