What could cause this?

i have a 97 F250 psd the speedometer just cut out one day but i found that if i rest my foot on the clutch it swill work till i remove my foot is it a short or what i have no clue i thought the cable went bad but i changed it and still same problem

Check all of your grounds under the dash and check the fuse and connection in the fuse box under the dash.
