water seperator

Hello,
I bought my first diesel about 2 weeks ago 84 f250 6.9 I have a couple of other older ford trucks with gas engines and am excited about the diesel, anyways the water in fuel light has been on was on when i bought it i tried to drain water by pulling the ring on top but nothing happens is it possibly plugged up and if so how do you clean it out thanks for your help, everything else works great it runs strong and starts right up.

It's possible that someone blocked off the drain tube. These are commong air intrusion points, so you might have to trace the hose coming out and down from the water sep. and see if it plugged or clogged. It comes out just behind the dside front tire, behind the inner fender. Have a look and see what you can see. Many times a 3/8 bolt is inserted and clamped to stop air getting into the system, because when you open the drain, it often won't seal properly.

Water Separator

When you pull the ring up on your water separator you are lifting a shaft with a rubber tip on the end that seals a hole on the bottom of the unit. Some times the little rubber tip comes off the shaft and stays in the hole. If that is the case you will need to remove the water separator and unscrew the plunger and disconnect the drain hose and poke the rubber tip lose. Turn the unit upside down and shake it until the tip falls out. Put the tip back on the shaft and twist a small wire around it to hold it and you should be good to go.

Disconnect the whole thing and throw it in the dumpster. Mount a nice Raycore there if you have particular concerns about the fuel you are buying. Or just leave it out.

Okay I pulled the separator off and it was plugged up with junk and was really dirty on inside I cleaned it out best I could and put it back on fired up the truck it ran for a short time and started running rough then died now it wont start, so do you think some of that junk got sucked into the line or now that it is cleared out is it sucking air into system?

well I guess you are supposed to fill the separator with clean diesel before putting it back on? I put it back on empty and I think air got sucked into pump so I put on a new fuel filter and purged all the lines and got her started and now it is running good.

How did you clean your seperator? I've been trying to get people to try this ever since I took one apart, and percieved that it may be servicable.

I used a can of brake parts cleaner and just sprayed it good and also used a pipe brush on it then filled it with marvel mystery oil and let it soak for a couple of hours then emptied it out and put it on although I should have filled it with clean diesel fuel before installing it back in the truck.

oh and it is working good now the light went off and I noticed it was leaking a little out of the drain hose so I put a bolt in it, but I can pull the bolt and pull the ring and it will actually drain. With the new fuel filter and the separator being clean I noticed it is running better and a little more responsive. Even though my water pump went out today and had to change that out, but its fixed now and I am definitely learning about diesels now.
