Used Turbo

I was thinking about looking for a used turbo off of a parts truck. What years would fit an 87 6.9. Can I use one from a 94 powerstroke. What do I have to look out for.

A turbo setup off of any 6.9 or 7.3 IDI *pickup* will fit. Van turbos use different mounts. A PowerStroke is a completely different engine with no parts in common with IDI engines.

You aren't just looking for a turbo, you need the crossover pipe, down pipe, air filter assembly and air intake hat.

the turbo needs an overhaul but all the parts and pipes are there. this kit uses the stock air cleaner assembly.

Yes, I am just looking for something that is not as expensive as the new turbo setups. What differences are there between stock and aftermarkets. The truck is a daily driver. I think I have to replace the head gaskets so if a turbo was not out of reach money wise I was thinking about doing one.

Basically you have a choice between wastegated and non-wastegated turbos. Non-wastegate will be cheaper and will develop boost slower.

A non-wastegate is probably better for a "well used" motor.

I believe the exhaust pipe from the exhaust manifolds to the turbo down pipe is specific to the type of transmission in the truck, at least for the banks system. The turbo is the same.
