I'm looking to complete the Moose Tail alternator project by rally time, and I'm figuring on using this as an excuse to up the ampere rating of the Moose Truck's alternator at the same time. I'll put the existing alternator in the tail, and get a new bigger one for the Moose Truck. I think the stocker is 80 amp. What's available out there? This will be one of those odd moments when I can't get what I want at the Ford parts counter.

I believe the alts in the 92.5 and up trucks are 130amps. You'd have to work out the pulleys.

But on a more important note, how the BLEEP are you gonna use an alternator in a trailer. cookoo

How much are you looking to spend?

This guy quoted me $250 for a 200 amp and around $150 for 130 amp, either internal or external regulated with no core. The new wiring plug was extra for the internal. Since most of the rebuild shops around here get at least $90 to rebuild the stock alternator, the price seemed reasonable. http://verizonsupersite.com/4alterstartcom/door/

This is the closest one I could find listed on the site http://verizonsupersite.com/4alters...rizonsupersite.com/4alterstartcom/alternators
I recommend calling him if your interested.

I have a feeling that Mel is going to take some duct tape and make a belt then strap a pulley on the rear diff yoke of the axle on the Tail then duct tape the alt in place under there so that as he rolls down the road it powers the alt to charge the batteries that run the refrig which keeps the beer cold ;Sweet which would get high marks in anyone's book...

I'm just going to throw this tid bit out there........... dont swonk me out of existance.

Can you guys get the ambulance alternator for your year models? I know in the other years the ambulance alternator pumped out 200 or more amps..... just something to think about if you already havent explored that option (if it even exists).

OK, I'm outta here before you guys gang up on me and take my lunch money.

You know, from a guy who doesn't look like he gets too dirty when he's working on a diesel, you got some pretty good ideas :D There are good/bad sides to it tho. For our generation Lecee-Neville is the maker of the "astro-amp" alternators. Problem is pricing. They are trully out of this world pricewise. As far as Ford alternators goes, the large case 7078 can be easily hopped up to 100A and at 140A the reliability goes downhill fast. My advice is stock with the 100A. You won't have to worry as much. couple of items to beef up tho. First is the juice cable from the alt to the solenoid stud. Stock is 10ga. going to 4ga. won't hurt at all. keeps things from getting hot. second, if your local parts supplier is good, there's a parts maker called "Transpo" that makes two types of external regulators that will plug right in. P/N F450HD is built to regulate 100A and has an adjustable cut-in. That will allow the alt to really put out at low rpm's. Critical from towtrucks that have all the worklights going at slightly off-idle rpms(1100rpm max due to PTO restrictions). The P/N F450XHD is for 140A and is triple the price. Make absolutely sure all connections are clean and corrosion-free. Remember....higher AMPS = very sepctacular meltdowns when something goes sideways. -cuss

Excellent posts! Lots of good info there. I've got a lot of info to digest and a few calls to make. Yes Rob, Travis has the idea, but there will be a lot less duct tape then he's imagined. The real trick will be the circuit I need to build to turn the charging circuit on and off depending on the trailer moving or not. And before somebody who doesn't know me reads this and says something dumb like "Why don't you just charge the on board battery with the trailer plug?" the answer is "because I don't want to." ;p
